Context of Hebrews 1:5
3The Son is the radiance and only expression of the glory of [our awesome] God [reflecting God’s Shekinah glory, the Light-being, the brilliant light of the divine], and the exact representation and perfect imprint of His [Father’s] essence, and upholding and maintaining and propelling all things [the entire physical and spiritual universe] by His powerful word [carrying the universe along to its predetermined goal]. When He [Himself and no other] had [by offering Himself on the cross as a sacrifice for sin] accomplished purification from sins and established our freedom from guilt, He sat down [revealing His completed work] at the right hand of the Majesty on high [revealing His Divine authority], 4having become as much superior to angels, since He has inherited a more excellent and glorious name than they [that is, Son—the name above all names]. For to which of the angels did the Father ever say, “You are My Son, Today I have begotten (fathered) You [established You as a Son, with kingly dignity]”? And again [did He ever say to the angels], “I shall be a Father to Him And He shall be a Son to Me”? 6And when He again brings the firstborn [highest-ranking Son] into the world, He says, “And all the angels of God are to worship Him.” 7And concerning the angels He says, “Who makes His angels winds, And His ministering servants flames of fire [to do His bidding].”

Commentaries on Hebrews 1:5
- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 5Thou art my Son, this day have I begotten thee - These words are quoted from Psalm 2:7, a psalm that seems to refer only to the Messiah; and they are quoted by St. Paul, Acts 13:33, as referring to the resurrection of Christ. And this application of them is confirmed by the same apostle, Romans 1:4, as by his resurrection from the dead he was declared - manifestly proved, to be the Son of God with power; God having put forth his miraculous energy in…Read the comment
- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 5For unto which of the angels - The object of this is, to prove that the Son of God, who has spoken to people in these last days, is superior to the angels. As the apostle was writing to those who had been trained in the Jewish religion, and who admitted the authority of the Old Testament, of course he made his appeal to that, and undoubtedly referred for proof to those places which were generally admitted to relate to the Messiah. Abarbanel says, that…Read the comment
- Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 4-14Verses 4-14 Many Jews had a superstitious or idolatrous respect for angels, because they had received the law and other tidings of the Divine will by their ministry. They looked upon them as mediators between God and men, and some went so far as to pay them a kind of religious homage or worship. Thus it was necessary that the apostle should insist, not only on Christ's being the Creator of all things, and therefore of angels themselves, but as being the…Read the comment
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 5did God ever say: This verse quotes Psalm 2:7 and 2 Samuel 7:14. By raising Jesus to his right hand, the Father declared his special relationship with the Son (see Acts 1:9–11; 2:32–36; 7:55–56). Today I have become your Father (literally Today I have begotten You): Jesus did not become the Son at the exaltation (when God raised Jesus to heaven and gave him the highest honor). He had been involved in creation (Hebrews 1:2). The exaltation confirmed his…Read the comment
- Jamieson–Fausset–Brown Commentary · v. 55. For--substantiating His having "obtained a more excellent name than the angels." unto which--A frequent argument in this Epistle is derived from the silence of Scripture (He 1:13; He 2:16; 7:3, 14) [Bengel]. this day have I begotten thee--(Psa 2:7). Fulfilled at the resurrection of Jesus, whereby the Father "declared," that is, made manifest His divine Sonship, heretofore veiled by His humiliation (Ac 13:33; Ro 1:4). Christ has a fourfold right to the…Read the comment
