Context of Luke 5:33
31And Yeshua answered and said to them, “Those who are healthy have no need for a doctor, but those who are sick do. 32I did not come to call the righteous, but the sinful to repentance.” But they said to Him, “John’s disciples often fast and offer prayers, as do the disciples of the Pharisees. But Your disciples are eating and drinking.” 34But Yeshua said to them, “You cannot make the guests of the bridegroom fast while the bridegroom is with them, can you? 35But the days will come; and when the bridegroom is taken away from them, then they will fast in those days.”

- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 33-39Verses 33-39 See this passage illustrated in the notes at Matthew 9:14-17. Luke 5:39 Having drunk old wine - Wine increases its strength and flavor, and its mildness and mellowness, by age, and the old is therefore preferable. They who had tasted such mild and mellow wine would not readily drink the comparatively sour and astringent juice of the grape as it came from the press. The meaning of this proverb in this place seems to be this: You Pharisees…Read the comment

Fasting is not a way to become righteous (to be made right with God; Isaiah 58:4–5; Jeremiah 14:12). But it is a spiritual pratice that helps a…Read the comment
