Context of 3 John 1:7
5Loved ones, you are acting faithfully in whatever you do for the brethren and especially for strangers. 6They have testified to your love before Messiah’s community. You will do well to send them on their way in a manner worthy of God. For on behalf of the Name they went out, accepting nothing from the pagans. 8Therefore we ought to support such people, so we might become co-workers in the truth. 9I wrote something to Messiah’s community, but Diotrephes, who loves to be first among them, doesn’t welcome us.

Taking nothing of the Gentiles - Receiving no emolument for their labor, but in every respect showing themselves to be truly disinterested. Sometimes, and on some special occasions, this may be necessary; but the laborer is worthy of his hire is the maxim of the author of Christianity. And those congregations of Christians…Read the comment

- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 7-8On behalf of the Name: John did not need to specify whose name this was because early Christians understood that the Name referred to Jesus Christ (see Acts 5:41). The traveling teachers had chosen to accept nothing offered to them from people who are not Christians. Instead, they relied on the churches for support. Christians who give support to trustworthy traveling teachers share in their work as those teachers spread the truth (see Matthew 10:41–42…Read the comment
