Context of 3 John 1:5

3For I was overjoyed when some brethren came and testified of the truth in you—how you are walking in truth. 4I have no greater joy than this—to hear that my children are walking in the truth. Loved ones, you are acting faithfully in whatever you do for the brethren and especially for strangers. 6They have testified to your love before Messiah’s community. You will do well to send them on their way in a manner worthy of God. 7For on behalf of the Name they went out, accepting nothing from the pagans.

• Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 5Thou doest faithfully - . Kypke thinks that is put here for , and that the phrase signifies to keep or preserve the faith, or to be bound by the faith, or to keep one's engagements. Thou hast acted as the faith - the Christian religion, required thee to act, in all that thou hast done, both to the brethren at home, and to the strangers - the itinerant evangelists, who, in the course of their travels, have called at thy house. There is not a word here…Read the comment

He now speaks more particularly of his acts of generous hospitality, and says that he had fully, in that respect, done his duty as a Christian. Whatsoever thou doest - In all your contact with them, and in all your conduct toward them. The particular thing which led to this remark was his…Read the comment
