Context of 3 John 1:7
5My friend, you do many things to help other believers. You help them even when they are strangers to you. This shows that you are serving God well. 6These men have spoken to the group of believers here about your love. Please continue to help them when they visit you. Give them the things that they need to continue on their journey. That will make God happy. They are travelling to different places to tell people about Jesus Christ. They do not accept any gifts from those people who are not Christians. 8Because of that, we Christians must help them with the things that they need. In this way we will be working together with them as they tell people the true message about Christ. 9I have already written something to the group of believers. But Diotrephes refuses to accept our authority. He really wants to be the only leader among them.

- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 7For his name's sake they went forth - For the sake of preaching the Gospel of the grace of God, and making known Jesus to the heathen. Taking nothing of the Gentiles - Receiving no emolument for their labor, but in every respect showing themselves to be truly disinterested. Sometimes, and on some special occasions, this may be necessary; but the laborer is worthy of his hire is the maxim of the author of Christianity. They went forth - Or, “they have gone forth” - ̓͂ exēlthon- referring to the journey which they had then undertaken; not to the former one. - Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 7-8On behalf of the Name: John did not need to specify whose name this was because early Christians understood that the Name referred to Jesus Christ (see Acts 5:41). The traveling teachers had chosen to accept nothing offered to them from people who are not Christians. Instead, they relied on the churches for support. Christians who give support to trustworthy traveling teachers share in their work as those teachers spread the truth (see Matthew 10:41–42…Read the comment
