Revised Version 1895
Chronicles 21:2-14
And DavidH1732 saidH559 to JoabH3097 and to the princesH8269 of the peopleH5971, GoH935, numberH4557 IsraelH3478 from Beer-sheba evenH5704 to DanH1835; and bringH935 meH413 wordH559, that I may knowH3045 the sum of them.
And JoabH3097 saidH559, The LORDH3068 makeH3254 his peopleH5971 an hundredH3967 timesH6471 soH1961 manyH4100 moreH3254 as they be: but, my lordH3068 the kingH4428, are they notH3808 allH3605 my lord’sH3068 servantsH5650? whyH4100 doth my lordH3068 requireH1245 this thingH2063? whyH4100 will he be a causeH819 of guiltH819 unto IsraelH3478?
Nevertheless the king’sH4428 wordH1697 prevailedH2388 againstH5921 JoabH3097. Wherefore JoabH3097 departedH1980, and wentH1980 throughoutH3605 allH3605 IsraelH3478, and cameH935 to JerusalemH3389.
And JoabH3097 gaveH5414 upH5414 the sum of the numberingH4557 of the peopleH5971 unto DavidH1732. And allH3605 they of IsraelH3478 were a thousandH505 thousandH505 and an hundredH3967 thousandH505 menH376 that drewH8025 swordH2719: and JudahH3063 was fourH702 hundredH3967 threescore and ten thousandH505 menH376 that drewH8025 swordH2719;
But LeviH3878 and BenjaminH1144 countedH6485 he notH3808 among them: for the king’sH4428 wordH1697 was abominableH8581 to JoabH3097.
And GodH430 was displeasedH7489 with this thingH1697; therefore he smoteH5221 IsraelH3478.
And DavidH1732 saidH559 unto GodH430, I have sinnedH2398 greatlyH3966, in that I have doneH6213 this thingH1697: but nowH6258, put awayH5674, I beseechH4994 thee, the iniquityH5771 of thy servantH5650; for I have doneH6213 veryH3966 foolishlyH5528.
And the LORDH3068 spake unto GadH1410, David’sH1732 seerH2374, sayingH559,
Go and speakH1696 unto DavidH1732, sayingH559, ThusH3541 saith the LORDH3068, I offerH6213 thee threeH7969 things; chooseH977 thee one of them, that I may doH6213 it unto thee.
SoH3541 GadH1410 cameH935 to DavidH1732, and saidH559 unto him, ThusH3541 saith the LORDH3068, TakeH935 which thou wilt;
eitherH518 threeH7969 yearsH8141 of famineH7458; or threeH7969 monthsH2320 to be consumed beforeH6440 thy foes, whileH3117 that the swordH2719 of thine enemiesH341 overtaketh thee; or elseH3605 threeH7969 daysH3117 the swordH2719 of the LORDH3068, evenH518 pestilenceH1698 in the landH776, and the angelH4397 of the LORDH3068 destroyingH7843 throughoutH3605 allH3605 the coasts of IsraelH3478. NowH6258 therefore considerH7200 whatH4100 answerH7725 I shall returnH7725 to him that sentH7971 meH7971.
And DavidH1732 saidH559 unto GadH1410, I am in a greatH3966 strait: letH4994 meH413 fallH5307 nowH4994 intoH413 the handH3027 of the LORDH3068; for veryH3966 greatH3966 are his merciesH7356: and letH4994 meH413 notH408 fallH5307 intoH413 the handH3027 of manH120.
SoH5414 the LORDH3068 sentH5414 a pestilenceH1698 uponH5307 IsraelH3478: and there fellH5307 of IsraelH3478 seventyH7657 thousandH505 menH376.
