Context of Revelation 9:11
9They wore armor made of iron, and their wings roared like an army of chariots rushing into battle. 10They had tails that stung like scorpions, and for five months they had the power to torment people. Their king is the angel from the bottomless pit; his name in Hebrew is Abaddon, and in Greek, Apollyon—the Destroyer. 12The first terror is past, but look, two more terrors are coming! 13Then the sixth angel blew his trumpet, and I heard a voice speaking from the four horns of the gold altar that stands in the presence of God.

Abaddon - From אבד abad, he destroyed. Apollyon - From , intensive, and , to destroy. The meaning is the same both in the Hebrew and Greek.Read the comment
- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 11And they had a king over them - A ruler who marshalled their hosts. Locusts often, and indeed generally, move in bands, though they do not appear to be under the direction of anyone as a particular ruler or guide. In this case it struck John as a remarkable peculiarity that they had a king - a king who, it would seem, had the absolute control, and to whom was to be traced all the destruction which would ensue from their emerging from the bottomless pit…Read the comment
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 11The king of the locusts is identified in three ways: as the angel from the bottomless pit, likely different from the fallen star in Revelation 9:1, who unlocked the abyss instead of coming from it; as Abaddon (meaning "destruction"), often associated with death (see Job 28:22; Psalm 88:11); and as Apollyon, the Destroyer (see 1 Corinthians 10:10). Although John does not directly link the devil with this king of the locusts, the prince of demons is…Read the comment
