Context of Mark 15:39
37Then Jesus uttered another loud cry and breathed his last. 38And the curtain in the sanctuary of the Temple was torn in two, from top to bottom. When the Roman officer who stood facing him saw how he had died, he exclaimed, “This man truly was the Son of God!” 40Some women were there, watching from a distance, including Mary Magdalene, Mary (the mother of James the younger and of Joseph), and Salome. 41They had been followers of Jesus and had cared for him while he was in Galilee. Many other women who had come with him to Jerusalem were also there.

Commentaries on Mark 15:39
- Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 33-41Verses 33-41 There was a thick darkness over the land, from noon until three in the afternoon. The Jews were doing their utmost to extinguish the Sun of Righteousness. The darkness signified the cloud which the human soul of Christ was under, when he was making it an offering for sin. He did not complain that his disciples forsook him, but that his Father forsook him. In this especially he was made sin for us. When Paul was to be offered as a sacrifice…Read the comment
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 39The centurion: The Latin word centurion refers to an officer in charge of 100 men. Jesus as the Son of God was announced by many voices. God declared it(1:11; 9:7). Demons also recognized it (1:24, 34; 3:11; 5:7). Mark states it at the beginning of the Gospel (1:1). Jesus himself speaks about it (12:6; 13:32; 14:61–62). Now, a Gentile (non-Jewish) officer also declares it.Read the comment
