Context of Mark 15:38
36One of them ran and filled a sponge with sour wine, holding it up to him on a reed stick so he could drink. “Wait!” he said. “Let’s see whether Elijah comes to take him down!” 37Then Jesus uttered another loud cry and breathed his last. And the curtain in the sanctuary of the Temple was torn in two, from top to bottom. 39When the Roman officer who stood facing him saw how he had died, he exclaimed, “This man truly was the Son of God!” 40Some women were there, watching from a distance, including Mary Magdalene, Mary (the mother of James the younger and of Joseph), and Salome.

Commentaries on Mark 15:38
- Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 33-41Verses 33-41 There was a thick darkness over the land, from noon until three in the afternoon. The Jews were doing their utmost to extinguish the Sun of Righteousness. The darkness signified the cloud which the human soul of Christ was under, when he was making it an offering for sin. He did not complain that his disciples forsook him, but that his Father forsook him. In this especially he was made sin for us. When Paul was to be offered as a sacrifice…Read the comment
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 38The veil of the temple … torn in two might have been one of two curtains. It may have been the curtain that separated the sanctuary from the courtyard. This curtain was a large and beautiful tapestry about 23 meters tall (80 feet). Or it may have been the inner curtain that separated the Most Holy Place (the most sacred room) from the rest of the sanctuary. If it was the outer curtain, people could have seen it tear (compare the "darkness" in 15:33). This…Read the comment
