Context of Mark 15:39
37Jesus let out a loud cry and breathed his last. 38Then the curtain of the temple was torn in two from top to bottom. When the centurion, who was standing opposite him, saw the way he breathed his last, he said, “Truly this man was the Son of God!” 40There were also women watching from a distance. Among them were Mary Magdalene, Mary the mother of James the younger and of Joses, and Salome. 41In Galilee these women followed him and took care of him. Many other women had come up with him to Jerusalem.

- Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 33-41Verses 33-41 There was a thick darkness over the land, from noon until three in the afternoon. The Jews were doing their utmost to extinguish the Sun of Righteousness. The darkness signified the cloud which the human soul of Christ was under, when he was making it an offering for sin. He did not complain that his disciples forsook him, but that his Father forsook him. In this especially he was made sin for us. When Paul was to be offered as a sacrifice…Read the comment
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 39The centurion: The Latin word centurion refers to an officer in charge of 100 men. Jesus as the Son of God was announced by many voices. God declared it(1:11; 9:7). Demons also recognized it (1:24, 34; 3:11; 5:7). Mark states it at the beginning of the Gospel (1:1). Jesus himself speaks about it (12:6; 13:32; 14:61–62). Now, a Gentile (non-Jewish) officer also declares it.Read the comment
