Context of Acts 10:40
38And you know that God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Spirit and with power. Then Jesus went around doing good and healing all who were oppressed by the devil, for God was with him. 39“And we apostles are witnesses of all he did throughout Judea and in Jerusalem. They put him to death by hanging him on a cross, but God raised him to life on the third day. Then God allowed him to appear, 41not to the general public, but to us whom God had chosen in advance to be his witnesses. We were those who ate and drank with him after he rose from the dead. 42And he ordered us to preach everywhere and to testify that Jesus is the one appointed by God to be the judge of all—the living and the dead.

- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 40Him God raised up the third day - He lay long enough under the power of death to prove that he was dead; and not too long, lest it should be supposed that his disciples had time sufficient to have practiced some deceit or imposture; and, to prevent this, the Jews took care to have the tomb well guarded during the whole time which he lay there.Read the comment

- Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 34-43Verses 34-43 Acceptance cannot be obtained on any other ground than that of the covenant of mercy, through the atonement of Christ; but wherever true religion is found, God will accept it without regarding names or sects. The fear of God and works of righteousness are the substance of true religion, the effects of special grace. Though these are not the cause of a man's acceptance, yet they show it; and whatever may be wanting in knowledge or faith, will…Read the comment
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 36-43Peter often emphasizes the role of the apostles as witnesses to the good news (the message about Jesus’s life, death, and resurrection). He reminds his listeners that they had direct contact with Jesus. The apostles ate and drank with Jesus after he rose from the dead (see Luke 24:41–43). They saw him alive again. Because they were eyewitnesses of his resurrection, they could testify that Jesus had defeated death (see Acts 3:15; 4:33; 13:30–31). Jesus…Read the comment
