Context of Acts 10:40
38Jesus who [was] of Nazareth: how God anointed him with [the] Holy Spirit and with power; who went through [all quarters] doing good, and healing all that were under the power of the devil, because God was with him. 39We also [are] witnesses of all things which he did both in the country of the Jews and in Jerusalem; whom they also slew, having hanged him on a cross. This [man] God raised up the third day and gave him to be openly seen, 41not of all the people, but of witnesses who were chosen before of God, us who have eaten and drunk with him after he arose from among [the] dead. 42And he commanded us to preach to the people, and to testify that he it is who was determinately appointed of God [to be] judge of living and dead.

- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 40Him God raised up the third day - He lay long enough under the power of death to prove that he was dead; and not too long, lest it should be supposed that his disciples had time sufficient to have practiced some deceit or imposture; and, to prevent this, the Jews took care to have the tomb well guarded during the whole time which he lay there.Read the comment

- Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 34-43Verses 34-43 Acceptance cannot be obtained on any other ground than that of the covenant of mercy, through the atonement of Christ; but wherever true religion is found, God will accept it without regarding names or sects. The fear of God and works of righteousness are the substance of true religion, the effects of special grace. Though these are not the cause of a man's acceptance, yet they show it; and whatever may be wanting in knowledge or faith, will…Read the comment
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 36-43Peter often emphasizes the role of the apostles as witnesses to the good news (the message about Jesus’s life, death, and resurrection). He reminds his listeners that they had direct contact with Jesus. The apostles ate and drank with Jesus after he rose from the dead (see Luke 24:41–43). They saw him alive again. Because they were eyewitnesses of his resurrection, they could testify that Jesus had defeated death (see Acts 3:15; 4:33; 13:30–31). Jesus…Read the comment
