Context of Mark 7:27
25For a woman whose young daughter had an unclean spirit heard about Him, and she came and fell at His feet. 26The woman was a Greek, a Syro-Phoenician by birth, and she kept asking Him to cast the demon out of her daughter. But Jesus said to her, “Let the children be filled first, for it is not good to take the children’s bread and throw it to the little dogs.” 28And she answered and said to Him, “Yes, Lord, yet even the little dogs under the table eat from the children’s crumbs.” 29Then He said to her, “For this saying go your way; the demon has gone out of your daughter.”

- Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 24-30Verses 24-30 Christ never put any from him that fell at his feet, which a poor trembling soul may do. As she was a good woman, so a good mother. This sent her to Christ. His saying, Let the children first be filled, shows that there was mercy for the Gentiles, and not far off. She spoke, not as making light of the mercy, but magnifying the abundance of miraculous cures among the Jews, in comparison with which a single cure was but as a crumb. Thus, while…Read the comment
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 27-28Jesus responds to the woman in what might seem like a severe way. But their interaction shows that Jesus wanted to see her faith (compare Matthew 15:28). Jesus did not use the word first to exclude her as a Gentile (non-Jew) from God’s grace (kindness and favor). Instead, it showed that his mission was directed first to the Jews (Acts 13:46; Romans 1:16). The woman replied with humility and faith. She acknowledged the priority of the Jewish people but…Read the comment

"Then my turn, it seems, is coming!--but then, 'The CHILDREN first?' Ah! when, on that rule, shall my turn ever come!" But ere she has time for these ponderings of His word, another word comes to supplement it. for it is not meet to take the children's bread, and to cast it unto the dogs--Is this the death of her hopes? Nay, rather it is life from…Read the comment
