Context of Mark 7:27
25Immediately, a certain woman heard that he was there. This woman had a daughter who had a bad spirit in her. The woman came to Jesus and she went down on her knees by his feet. 26She was not a Jew. Her family was from Phoenicia in the country of Syria. She asked Jesus to make the bad spirit go out of her daughter. Jesus said to the woman, ‘First, the children must eat all that they want. It is not right to take food from the children and then throw it to the dogs.’ 28The woman replied, ‘Yes, sir. That is true. But small pieces of food drop while the children eat. And the dogs under the table eat those pieces.’ 29‘That is a good answer,’ Jesus replied. ‘Now the bad spirit has left your daughter. You may go.’

- Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 24-30Verses 24-30 Christ never put any from him that fell at his feet, which a poor trembling soul may do. As she was a good woman, so a good mother. This sent her to Christ. His saying, Let the children first be filled, shows that there was mercy for the Gentiles, and not far off. She spoke, not as making light of the mercy, but magnifying the abundance of miraculous cures among the Jews, in comparison with which a single cure was but as a crumb. Thus, while…Read the comment
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 27-28Jesus responds to the woman in what might seem like a severe way. But their interaction shows that Jesus wanted to see her faith (compare Matthew 15:28). Jesus did not use the word first to exclude her as a Gentile (non-Jew) from God’s grace (kindness and favor). Instead, it showed that his mission was directed first to the Jews (Acts 13:46; Romans 1:16). The woman replied with humility and faith. She acknowledged the priority of the Jewish people but…Read the comment
- Jamieson–Fausset–Brown Commentary · v. 2727. But Jesus said unto her, Let the children first be filled--"Is there hope for me here?" "Filled FIRST?" "Then my turn, it seems, is coming!--but then, 'The CHILDREN first?' Ah! when, on that rule, shall my turn ever come!" But ere she has time for these ponderings of His word, another word comes to supplement it. for it is not meet to take the children's bread, and to cast it unto the dogs--Is this the death of her hopes? Nay, rather it is life from…Read the comment
