Context of Romans 3:2
1What advantage, then, is there in being a Jew, or what value is there in circumcision? Much in every way! First of all, the Jews have been entrusted with the very words of God. 3What if some were unfaithful? Will their unfaithfulness nullify God’s faithfulness? 4Not at all! Let God be true, and every human being a liar. As it is written: “So that you may be proved right when you speak and prevail when you judge.”

Commentaries on Romans 3:2
- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 2Apostle. Much every way - The Jews, in reference to the means and motives of obedience, enjoy many advantages beyond the Gentiles; and, principally, because to them were committed the oracles of God - that revelation of his will to Moses and the prophets, containing a treasure of excellencies, with which no other part of the world has been favored; though they have most grievously abused these privileges.Read the comment
- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 2Much every way - Or, in every respect. This is the answer of the apostle to the objection in Romans 3:1. Chiefly - That is, this is the principal advantage, and one including all others. The main benefit of being a Jew is, to possess the sacred Scriptures and their instructions. Unto them were committed - Or were intrusted, were confided. The word translated “were committed,” is what is commonly employed to express “faith” or “confidence,” and it implied…Read the comment
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 2The Jews had the advantage of receiving words of God. First of all: Paul does not add a second or third point to his list. He might have forgotten to continue, or first of all might mean "most importantly." However, 9:4–5 suggests what a list of Jewish privileges might include. By using the phrase very words (Greek logia, meaning "oracles" or "messages"), Paul emphasizes God's personal communication with his people (see Deuteronomy 33:9; Psalm 105:19)…Read the comment
- Jamieson–Fausset–Brown Commentary · v. 1-81-2. What advantage then hath the Jew?--that is, "If the final judgment will turn solely on the state of the heart, and this may be as good in the Gentile without, as in the Jew within, the sacred enclosure of God's covenant, what better are we Jews for all our advantages?"
