Context of 2 Thessalonians 3:4
2and that we may be delivered from perverse and evil people. For not all have faith. 3But the Lord is faithful, and he will strengthen you and protect you from the evil one. And we are confident about you in the Lord that you are both doing – and will do – what we are commanding. 5Now may the Lord direct your hearts toward the love of God and the endurance of Christ. 6But we command you, brothers and sisters, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, to keep away from any brother who lives an undisciplined life and not according to the tradition they received from us.

- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 4And we have confidence in the Lord - Not primarily in you, for you have hearts like others, but in the Lord. It is remarkable that when Paul expresses the utmost confidence in Christians that they will live and act as becomes their profession, his reliance is not on anything in themselves, but wholly on the faithfulness of God. He must be a stranger to the human heart who puts much confidence in it even in its best state; see Philemon 1:6; Philemon 4:7; 2…Read the comment

- Jamieson–Fausset–Brown Commentary · v. 44. we have confidence in the Lord--as "faithful" (2Th 3:3). Have confidence in no man when left to himself [Bengel]. that ye both do--Some of the oldest manuscripts insert a clause, "that ye both have done" before, "and are doing, and will do."
