Context of Matthew 22:12
10The servants went into the streets and brought in all the good people and all the evil people they found. And the wedding hall was filled with guests. 11“When the king came to see the guests, he saw a person who was not dressed in the wedding clothes ⌞provided for the guests⌟. He said to him, ‘Friend, how did you get in here without proper wedding clothes?’ “The man had nothing to say. 13Then the king told his servants, ‘Tie his hands and feet, and throw him outside into the darkness. People will cry and be in extreme pain there.’ 14“Therefore, many are invited, but few of those are chosen to stay.”

- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 12He saith unto him, Friend - Rather, companion: so should be translated. As this man represents the state of a person in the visible Church, who neglects to come unto the master of the feast for a marriage garment, for the salvation which Christ has procured, he cannot be with any propriety called a friend, but may well be termed a companion, as being a member of the visible Church, and present at all those ordinances where Christ's presence and blessing…Read the comment

- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 1-14In this parable, Israel had often rejected God’s message in the past. In the same way, Israel rejected the Messiah and faced judgment. In Israel’s place, God raised up the church (Matthew 16:17–19; 21:43). God also expects the church to live in righteousness (Romans 11:11–24).Read the comment
