Context of Mark 11:18
16He would not let anyone carry anything across the temple courtyard. 17Then he taught them by saying, “Scripture says, ‘My house will be called a house of prayer for all nations,’ but you have turned it into a gathering place for thieves.” When the chief priests and the experts in Moses’ Teachings heard him, they looked for a way to kill him. They were afraid of him because he amazed all the crowds with his teaching. 19(Every evening Jesus and his disciples would leave the city.) 20While Jesus and his disciples were walking early in the morning, they saw that the fig tree had dried up.

- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 11-26Verses 11-26 See this passage explained in the notes at Matthew 21:18-22. Mark 11:11 Into the temple - Not into the edifice properly called “the temple,” but into the “courts” which surrounded the principal edifice. Our Saviour, not being of the tribe of Levi, was not permitted to enter into the holy or most holy place; and when, therefore, it is said that he went into the “temple,” it is always to be understood of the “courts” surrounding the temple. - Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 12-18Verses 12-18 Christ looked to find some fruit, for the time of gathering figs, though it was near, was not yet come; but he found none. He made this fig-tree an example, not to the trees, but to the men of that generation. It was a figure of the doom upon the Jewish church, to which he came seeking fruit, but found none. Christ went to the temple, and began to reform the abuses in its courts, to show that when the Redeemer came to Zion, it was to turn…Read the comment
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 18The leading priests and teachers of the law began planning to kill Jesus because they feared him. His strong influence on the people, the amazement caused by his actions, and the power of his teaching threatened their authority (see 3:6; 12:12; 14:1–2, 10–11). Their response showed that reform alone would not be enough. God’s judgment was necessary.Read the comment
