Context of Luke 8:18
16“No one lights a lamp and hides it under a bowl or puts it under a bed. Instead, everyone who lights a lamp puts it on a lamp stand so that those who come in will see the light. 17There is nothing hidden that will not be revealed. There is nothing kept secret that will not come to light. “So pay attention to how you listen! Those who understand ⌞these mysteries⌟ will be given ⌞more knowledge⌟. However, some people don’t understand ⌞these mysteries⌟. Even what they think they understand will be taken away from them.” 19His mother and his brothers came to see him. But they couldn’t meet with him because of the crowd. 20Someone told Jesus, “Your mother and your brothers are standing outside. They want to see you.”

- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 18Even that which he seemeth to have - Or rather, even what he hath. ̔ , rendered by our common version, what he seemeth to have, seems to me to contradict itself. Let us examine this subject a little. To seem to have a thing, is only to have it in appearance, and not in reality; but what is possessed in appearance only can only be taken away in appearance; therefore on the one side there is no gain, and on the other side no loss. On this ground, the text…Read the comment

- Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 4-21Verses 4-21 There are many very needful and excellent rules and cautions for hearing the word, in the parable of the sower, and the application of it. Happy are we, and for ever indebted to free grace, if the same thing that is a parable to others, with which they are only amused, is a plain truth to us, by which we are taught and governed. We ought to take heed of the things that will hinder our profiting by the word we hear; to take heed lest we hear…Read the comment
