Context of Luke 10:40
38As they were traveling along, Jesus went into a village. A woman named Martha welcomed him into her home. 39She had a sister named Mary. Mary sat at the Lord’s feet and listened to him talk. But Martha was upset about all the work she had to do. So she asked, “Lord, don’t you care that my sister has left me to do the work all by myself? Tell her to help me.” 41The Lord answered her, “Martha, Martha! You worry and fuss about a lot of things. 42There’s only one thing you need. Mary has made the right choice, and that one thing will not be taken away from her.”

- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 40Martha was cumbered - , perplexed, from , about, and , I draw. She was harassed with different cares and employments at the same time; one drawing one way, and another, another: a proper description of a worldly mind. But in Martha's favor it may be justly said, that all her anxiety was to provide suitable and timely entertainment for our Lord and his disciples; for this is the sense in which the word , serving, should be taken. And we should not, on the…Read the comment
- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 40Martha was cumbered about much serving - Was much distracted with the cares of the family, and providing suitably to entertain the Saviour. It should be said here that there is no evidence that Martha had a worldly or covetous disposition. Her anxiety was to provide suitable entertainment for the Lord Jesus. As mistress of the family, this care properly devolved on her; and the only fault which can be charged on her was too earnest a desire to make such…Read the comment
