Context of Luke 10:19
17The 70 disciples came back very happy. They said, “Lord, even demons obey us when we use the power and authority of your name!” 18Jesus said to them, “I watched Satan fall from heaven like lightning. I have given you the authority to trample snakes and scorpions and to destroy the enemy’s power. Nothing will hurt you. 20However, don’t be happy that evil spirits obey you. Be happy that your names are written in heaven.” 21In that hour the Holy Spirit filled Jesus with joy. Jesus said, “I praise you, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, for hiding these things from wise and intelligent people and revealing them to little children. Yes, Father, this is what pleased you.

Commentaries on Luke 10:19
- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 19To tread on serpents, etc. - It is possible that by serpents and scorpions our Lord means the scribes and Pharisees, whom he calls serpents and a brood of vipers, Matthew 23:33, (see the note there), because, through the subtilty and venom of the old serpent, the devil, they opposed him and his doctrine; and, by trampling on these, it is likely that he means, they should get a complete victory over such: as it was an ancient custom to trample on the kings…Read the comment
- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 19To tread on serpents - Preservation from danger. If you tread on a poisonous reptile that would otherwise injure you, I will keep you from danger. If you go among bitter and malignant enemies that would seek your life, I will preserve you. See the notes at Mark 16:18. - Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 17-24Verses 17-24 All our victories over Satan, are obtained by power derived from Jesus Christ, and he must have all the praise. But let us beware of spiritual pride, which has been the destruction of many. Our Lord rejoiced at the prospect of the salvation of many souls. It was fit that particular notice should be taken of that hour of joy; there were few such, for He was a man of sorrows: in that hour in which he saw Satan fall, and heard of the good…Read the comment
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 19Snakes and scorpions were symbols of danger and evil (see Num 21:6–9; Deut 8:15; 1 Kgs 12:14; Isa 11:8; Ezek 2:6). Satan is the ancient serpent who tempted Eve (Gen 3:13–14; Rom 16:20; Rev 12:9; 20:2), and demonic forces are described as scorpions (Rev 9:3–4). • Nothing will injure you: This didn’t mean that Jesus’ followers should take dangerous chances. The point is that God protects his servants (e.g., Acts 28:3–6).Read the comment
- Jamieson–Fausset–Brown Commentary · v. 1919. Behold, I give you, &c.--not for any renewal of their mission, though probably many of them afterwards became ministers of Christ; but simply as disciples. serpents and scorpions--the latter more venomous than the former: literally, in the first instance (Mr 16:17, 18; Ac 28:5); but the next words, "and over all the power of the enemy, and nothing shall by any means hurt you," show that the glorious power of faith to "overcome the world" and "quench…Read the comment
