God’s Word Translation
Hebrews 10:29
29What do you think a person who shows no respect for the Son of God deserves? That person looks at the blood of the promise (the blood that made him holy) as no different from other people’s blood, and he insults the Spirit that God gave us out of his kindness. He deserves a much worse punishment.

Context of Hebrews 10:29
27All that is left is a terrifying wait for judgment and a raging fire that will consume God’s enemies. 28If two or three witnesses accused someone of rejecting Moses’ Teachings, that person was shown no mercy as he was executed. What do you think a person who shows no respect for the Son of God deserves? That person looks at the blood of the promise (the blood that made him holy) as no different from other people’s blood, and he insults the Spirit that God gave us out of his kindness. He deserves a much worse punishment. 30We know the God who said, “I alone have the right to take revenge. I will pay back.” God also said, “The Lord will judge his people.” 31Falling into the hands of the living God is a terrifying thing.

- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 29Of how much sorer punishment - Such offenses were trifling in comparison of this, and in justice the punishment should be proportioned to the offense. Trodden under foot the Son of God - Treated him with the utmost contempt and blasphemy. The blood of the covenant - an unholy thing - The blood of the covenant means here the sacrificial death of Christ, by which the new covenant between God and man was ratified, sealed, and confirmed. And counting this…Read the comment
- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 29Of how much sorer punishment, suppose ye, shall he be thought worthy - That is, he who renounces Christianity ought to be regarded as deserving a much severer punishment than the man who apostatized from the Jewish religion, and if he ought to be so regarded he will be - for God will treat every man as he ought to be treated. This must refer to future punishment, for the severest punishment was inflicted on the apostate from the Jewish religion which can…Read the comment
- Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 26-31Verses 26-31 The exhortations against apostacy and to perseverance, are urged by many strong reasons. The sin here mentioned is a total and final falling away, when men, with a full and fixed will and resolution, despise and reject Christ, the only Saviour; despise and resist the Spirit, the only Sanctifier; and despise and renounce the gospel, the only way of salvation, and the words of eternal life. Of this destruction God gives some notorious sinners…Read the comment
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 28-29The author compares two situations, one less severe and one more severe (see study note on Hebrews 9:14). The less severe situation is the old punishment of death for someone who refused to follow the law of Moses (see Deuteronomy 13:6–11). The more severe situation involves those who reject Christ and show him disrespect. How much more severely do you think one deserves to be punished: Eternal damnation awaits those who have rejected Christ. The blood of…Read the comment
