Context of Ephesians 6:19
17Also take salvation as your helmet and God’s word as the sword that the Spirit supplies. 18Pray in the Spirit in every situation. Use every kind of prayer and request there is. For the same reason be alert. Use every kind of effort and make every kind of request for all of God’s people. Also pray that God will give me the right words to say. Then I will speak boldly when I reveal the mystery of the Good News. 20Because I have already been doing this as Christ’s representative, I am in prison. So pray that I speak about this Good News as boldly as I have to. 21I’m sending Tychicus to you. He is our dear brother and a faithful deacon in the Lord’s work. He will tell you everything that is happening to me so that you will know how I’m getting along.

- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 19And for me, that utterance may be given unto me - ̔ . Kypke has proved by many examples that signifies permission and power to defend one's self in a court of justice; and this sense of the phrase is perfectly applicable to the case of St. Paul, who was an ambassador in bonds, ( Ephesians 6:20;), and expected to be called to a public hearing, in which he was not only to defend himself, but to prove the truth and excellency of the Christian religion. - Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 19And for me - Paul was then a prisoner at Rome. He specially needed the prayers of Christians: (1) that he might be sustained in his afflictions; and, (2) that he might be able to manifest the spirit which he ought, and to do good as he had opportunity. Learn hence that we should pray for the prisoner, the captive, the man in chains, the slave. There are in this land (the United States) about ten thousand prisoners - husbands, fathers, sons, brothers; or…Read the comment

- Jamieson–Fausset–Brown Commentary · v. 1919. for me--a different Greek preposition from that in Ep 6:18; translate, therefore, "on my behalf." that I may open my mouth boldly--rather, "that there may be given to me 'utterance,' or 'speech' in the opening of my mouth (when I undertake to speak; a formula used in set and solemn speech, Job 3:1; Da 10:16), so as with boldness to make known," &c. Bold plainness of speech was the more needed, as the Gospel is a "mystery" undiscoverable by mere…Read the comment
