You need to study more closely the teachings of the Bible. You will find revealed in its pages your duty to your kindred and to your brethren in the faith. The fifth commandment reads, “Honor thy father and thy mother, that thy days may be long upon the land which the Lord thy God giveth thee.” [Exodus 20:12.] Again we read, “Children, obey your parents in the Lord; for this is right.” [Ephesians 6:1.]

To children the Lord says, “Children, obey your parents in the Lord; for this is right.” [Ephesians 6:1.] This responsibility then rests upon the children; but they cannot fulfill it unless they are carefully and thoroughly educated to practice obedience because it is right, and be cause God requires it for the present and future happiness of the children, and for the peace and happiness of the parents. God will not excuse any neglect in this line.

Ms 75, 1895

The Lord Jesus does not teach us to hate anyone, in the way we use the word hate. Sin only is a hateful thing in the sight of God, and while the Lord hates the sin, he loves the sinner, and has manifested this by giving Christ for the sins of the world. “For God so loved the world, (not their sins and transgressions,) that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.” [John 3:16.] But he that would follow after Christ, must not let the influence of his affection for father, mother, son, or daughter, or any other friend or relative lead him into disobedience. He who yields his loyalty to God because of his affection for his relatives, shows that he does not love God supremely, and refuses to accept the condition of salvation. There are parents who are opposed to God, and who are determined that their children shall not obey God’s requirements. The commandments of the Lord enjoin upon children obedience to their parents up to a certain limit. But when parents seek to come between God and their children, when obedience to their parents means transgression of the law of God, then children are to obey God, who is our heavenly Father, him from whom all blessings flow. When children are placed in so disagreeable a position as this, they must go forward humbly, prayerfully, but be as firm as a rock to principle. If called upon to endure punishment, let them meekly submit to the pain. Children are to respect their parents in everything where they can do so conscientiously; but a child of God cannot respect parents in acts of transgression. The apostle says, “Children, obey your parents in the Lord: for this is right.” [Ephesians 6:1.] Children can obey their parents in the Lord, for then they will not be called upon to violate the commandments of God. Let children obey their parents in every command that is right, but let parents and children both remember that God is the Father and the Owner of us all. If parents should ask their children to swear falsely, to steal, to bear false witness, to break the Sabbath, or to violate any other one of the ten commandments, they are not to obey. God has the first claim upon them. He is the heavenly Parent, the Creator and Redeemer of the whole human family. But if the children who are under age, are compelled to do things that are contrary to that which is plainly prescribed by the commandments of the Lord, then sin is charged to the parents and they will have to answer for their own sins and for causing their children to transgress.

10LtMs, Ms 75, 1895, par. 7

“Honor thy father and mother, which is the first commandment with promise; that it may be well with thee, and thou mayest live long on the earth.” [Verses 2, 3.] How precious is this promise to all who obey the commandments of God. But parents should remember the part that they have to act in order that the child may fulfill God’s requirements. “And ye fathers, provoke not your children to wrath: but bring them up in the nurture and admonition of the Lord.” [Verse 4.] But there are many parents who have no inclination to love and serve God, and yet as is often the case, some of the children are converted from sin to righteousness; but for such there is a continual, daily cross to bear, in conscientiously seeking to follow Jesus where he may lead them, and still obey their parents who refuse to obey our heavenly Father. Such a child or youth is placed where he needs help every moment in order that he may move wisely in the fear of God, and neither dishonor God nor disobey his parents. Satan will sometimes cause the father or the mother to think that their child belongs to them, both soul and body. They act as though they were sole proprietors of the child; but their children are the property of God, both by creation and by redemption. Under the inspiration of Satan, a wicked father or mother may do very strange things, and work enormous iniquity in seeking to compel the child to dishonor God. This is not a rare thing. But the child is in God’s world, eating the bounties that God’s providence has supplied, and his first duty is to honor God. The father or the mother may even turn the child from home, but however trying it might be, let him trust in his heavenly Father, whose claims to obedience cannot be evaded. The Lord will open ways for those who would do righteousness, in order that they may not practice iniquity.

Lt 18b, 1891

7LtMs, Lt 18b, 1891, par. 28

Children are to be taught to respect their father and mother, and this education is to be given them by example as well as by precept. When the father gives kind attention to the mother, and the mother shows reverence for the father, the children will be educated to love and reverence their parents. They will be enabled to keep the fifth commandment: “Children, obey your parents in the Lord; for this is right. Honor thy father and thy mother; which is the first commandment with promise; that it may be well with thee, and that thou mayest live long upon the earth.” [Ephesians 6:1-3.]

7LtMs, Lt 18b, 1891, par. 30

The apostle exhorts parents to exercise their authority in wisdom. He says, “And ye fathers, provoke not your children to wrath; but bring them up in the nurture and admonition of the Lord.” [Verse 4.] Great care should be exercised lest children shall be treated in a way to provoke obstinacy and rebellion. Many parents, because of their own want of self-control, arouse the worst passions of their children’s hearts. They correct them in anger, and confirm them in their evil, instead of drawing them from the snare of Satan by correction administered in gentleness and love.

Submission and surrender to Christ are the most effectual lessons children and youth can learn. They are to train for this under the banner of Prince Emmanuel. This training is to commence in the sanctuary of the home. The apostle says, “Children, obey your parents in the Lord, for this is right. Honor thy father and mother, which is the first commandment with promise, that it may be well with thee, and that thou mayest live long on the earth.” [Ephesians 6:1-3.] “Honor thy father and thy mother: that thy days may be long upon the land which the Lord thy God giveth thee.” [Exodus 20:12.] This is the counsel of God. Will the children heed this instruction? Will they be wise unto salvation?

13LtMs, Ms 125, 1898, par. 10

The yoke of obligation is laid upon parents to do Christian missionary work in the home. The apostle continues, “Ye fathers, provoke not your children to wrath, but bring them up in the nurture and admonition of the Lord.” [Ephesians 6:4.] “Fathers, provoke not your children to anger, lest they be discouraged.” [Colossians 3:21.] Of Abraham God said: “I know him, that he will command his children and his household after him, and they shall keep the way of the Lord, that the Lord may bring upon Abraham that thing which he hath spoken of him.” [Genesis 18:19.] Parents are to be God-fearing educators of their children. The father is the house-band of the family, and he is to feel the responsibilities devolving upon him, as the Lord’s steward of a sacred trust.

“Children, obey your parents in the Lord,” the apostle writes, “for this is right. Honour thy father and mother, which is the first commandment with promise: That it may be well with thee, and that thou mayest live long upon the earth” (Ephesians 6:1-3). But who is going to teach these children to honor God, unless the father and mother teach them? Who is going to teach them what that promise means, if not their parents? There is nothing, parents, that will give your children such strength of character as to bring them up in the nurture and admonition of the Lord. Let them see that discipline is a part of God’s purpose for them. He wants us to harmonize with His plans, not allowing the children to grow up careless and unrestrained, but to submit to the will and the guidance of His Spirit. [Verses 10-17, quoted.]

My brethren and sisters, where is your strength and efficiency for the doing of this work? The apostle presents it to you in the words, “Praying with all prayer and supplication in the Spirit, and watching thereunto with all perseverance and supplication for all saints.” [Verse 18.] You must be prepared to listen to counsel from others. These words I was speaking before a perplexed company just before I called upon them to take their stand on the right side. If some one chooses another position, let him alone. Labor for the class of people who have never had the evidences of truth. So long as men hold fast to men, and believe men in the place of the Word of God, you cannot help them. You are working against principalities and powers, as is represented in Ephesians.

“Let no corrupt communication proceed out of your mouth, but that which is good to the use of edifying, that it may minister grace unto the hearers. And grieve not the Holy Spirit of God, whereby ye are sealed unto the day of redemption. Let all bitterness, and wrath, and anger, and clamor, and evil speaking, be put away from you, with all malice, and be ye kind one to another, tender hearted, forgiving one another, even as God for Christ’s sake hath forgiven you. Be ye therefore followers of God, as dear children; and walk in love, as Christ also hath loved us, and hath given himself for us an offering and a sacrifice to God for a sweet smelling savor. ... Servants, be obedient to them that are your masters, according to the flesh, with fear and trembling, (lest ye be unguarded, and be disrespectful of authority.) In singleness of heart, as unto Christ; not with eye service, as men pleasers, but as servants of Christ, doing the will [of God] from the heart,” working from principle and not from selfish motives or impulse. “With good will doing service, as to the Lord, and not to men: knowing that whatsoever good thing any man doeth, the same shall he receive of the Lord, whether he be bond or free. And, ye masters, do the same things unto them, forbearing threatening: knowing that your master also is in heaven; neither is there respect of persons with him.” [Ephesians 4:29-32; 5:1, 2; 6:5-9.] These words of inspiration are to be studied and obeyed. They cannot be ignored nor disregarded, nor treated with indifference. It is the doers of the Word that are to receive the reward.

“Finally, my brethren, be strong in the Lord, and in the power of his might. Put on the whole armor of God, that ye may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil.” [Verses 10, 11.] O how eagerly would Satan spring forward to exercise his hellish attributes, to stir up human minds to commit sin, and to become an offence to God. If he could do this, then he would claim it as his right to cause great affliction to come upon the passengers and crew, and were he not restrained, he would destroy the servants of God, and wreck the missionary ship. If the curtain could be rolled back, and we could see how perseveringly Satan works to gain possession of the minds and souls of men, there would be less trifling, less pride, less human inventions, less self-sufficiency, and every soul would walk humbly and tremblingly before God. Especially would this be the case with those who voyage upon the great deep. Although there have been many things transpiring upon the Pitcairn that were offensive to God, and although Satan worked upon the imagination of human agents to cause them to pursue a course that God would be compelled to give them up, yet the missionary vessel has been preserved upon the great deep. The working of Satan and the counterworking of God is the explanation of many things that transpired upon the ship that were inexplainable to the minds of those on board.

9LtMs, Lt 65, 1894, par. 18

Satan would immediately take us up and force his terrible companionship upon us. Oh, let us seek every day to obtain a deeper experience, cultivating the love of Jesus. Let everyone on the vessel realize that he is under the protection of God. Christ said, “Without me ye can do nothing.” [John 15:5.] “For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities and powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places. Wherefore take unto you the whole armor of God, that ye may be able to stand in the evil day, and having done all to stand.” [Ephesians 6:12, 13.]

9LtMs, Lt 65, 1894, par. 19

When you meet with unreasonable demands, and unreasonable requirements, bear in mind that those who command you are not working as agents of God, but agents of Satan, through whom he is working. Let your effort be to say or do anything that will help the tempted soul to resist the devil. This is the truest missionary work. Let every one heed the command of the chief Commander, “Stand therefore, having your loins girt about with truth, and having on the breast plate of righteousness; and your feet shod with the preparation of the gospel of peace; above all, taking the shield of faith, wherewith ye shall be able to quench all fiery darts of the wicked. And take the helmet of salvation and the sword of the spirit which is the word of God: praying always with all prayer and supplication in the spirit, and watching there unto with all perseverance and supplication for all saints.” [Verses 14-18.] Read the 6th chapter of Ephesians with prayerful interest, and may the Lord apply it to your souls with power.

If these men who went out from us had, as faithful stewards, searched deep into the Word of God, and heeded Paul’s words in the sixth chapter of Ephesians, they would now be standing firmly in the faith. Paul enjoins us: “Stand therefore, having your loins girt about with truth, and having on the breastplate of righteousness.” [Verse 14.] These men did not yield to Bible truth. They thought to wrap themselves up in a spurious sanctification which would accord with any false theories which men might choose to accept. They added not to their faith, but rather detracted from it. “A good man out of the good treasure of his heart, bringeth forth good things; but an evil man, out of the evil treasure of his heart, bringeth forth evil things.” [Matthew 12:35; Luke 6:45.] There is no middle ground to occupy. The heart is either given to God to be purified, and sanctified and refined, or it is the sport of Satan’s temptations.

This, says the apostle, “is the first commandment with promise.” Ephesians 6:2. I saw that coldness, indifference, and carelessness will prove the ruin of these dear boys. If they do not see the importance of firmly adopting and rigidly practicing right principles at home they will surely not do this at school. They need to bear responsibilities and home burdens. They need carefully to shun selfishness and the desire to follow inclination rather than duty. You, my dear young friends, should seek the Lord and should begin to be faithful and to show faithfulness and unselfish interest at home. “Honor thy father and thy mother” is the first commandment with promise. [Exodus 20:12; Ephesians 6:2.] The careless, reckless inattention of children in the performance of their duties at home is an abomination in the sight of the Lord. Education gained at the expense of filial duties, to the neglect of the soul’s interest, is at infinite loss. You cannot afford, young men, to barter away heaven so cheaply. It would be imitating Esau, who sold his birthright for a mess of pottage.

And above all these things put on charity, which is the bond of perfectness.” [Colossians 3:12-14.] “And ye, fathers, provoke not your children to wrath.” [Ephesians 6:4.]

Children are to be taught to respect their father and mother, and this education is to be given them by example as well as precept. When the father gives kind attention to the mother, and the mother shows reverence for the father, the children will be educated to love and reverence their parents. They will be enabled to keep the fifth commandment. [Ephesians 6:13, quoted.] When unbelieving parents give commands that contradict the requirements of Christ, then, though it may be painful, the children must obey the Lord. But God has expressly enjoined upon children the duty of honoring the person and authority of father and mother. They are to treat their parents respectfully, to kindly care for them when they have ability and opportunity. The fifth commandments stands at the head of the precepts showing the duty of man to his fellow-men.

13MR 83.3

The apostle exhorts parents to exercise their authority in wisdom. He says, “And, ye fathers, provoke not your children to wrath; but bring them up in the nurture and admonition of the Lord” [verse 4]. Great care should be exercised lest children shall be treated in a way to provoke obstinacy and rebellion. Many parents, because of their own want of self-control, arouse the worst passions of their children’s hearts. They correct them in anger, and confirm them in their evil, instead of drawing them from the snare of Satan by correction administered in gentleness and love.

And grieve not the Holy Spirit of God, whereby ye are sealed unto the day of redemption. Let all bitterness, and wrath, and anger, and clamour, and evil speaking, be put away from you, with all malice: and be ye kind one to another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, even as God for Christ’s sake hath forgiven you. Be ye therefore followers of God, as dear children; and walk in love, and Christ also hath loved us, and hath given Himself for us an offering and a sacrifice to God for a sweetsmelling savour.... Servants, be obedient to them that are your masters according to the flesh, with fear and trembling, in singleness of heart, as unto Christ; (lest ye be unguarded, and be disrespectful of authority) not with eye service, as men-pleasers, but as servants of Christ, doing the will of God from the heart (working from principle and not from selfish motives or from impulse); “With good will doing service, as to the Lord; and not to men: knowing that whatsoever good thing any man doeth, the same shall he receive of the Lord, whether he be bond or free. And, ye masters, do the same things unto them, forbearing threatening: knowing that your Master also is in heaven, neither is there respect of persons with Him.” (Ephesians 4:29-5:2; 6:5-9.) These words of inspiration are to be studied and obeyed. They cannot be ignored or disregarded, not treated with indifference. It is the doers of the Word that are to receive the reward.

“Finally, my brethren, be strong in the Lord, and in the power of his might. Put on the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil.” (Ephesians 6:10, 11.) Oh how eagerly would Satan spring forward to exercise his hellish attributes, to stir up human minds to commit sin and to become an offense to God. If he could do this, then he would claim it as his right to cause great affliction to come upon the passengers and crew, and were he not restrained, he would destroy the servants of God, and wreck the missionary ship.

Do we realize the sacred character of God’s work and the necessity of watching for souls as they that must give an account? We must be vigilant, “knowing the time, that now it is high time to awake out of sleep; for now is our salvation nearer than when we believed. Who will hearken to His warning? Have the churches that claim to believe the truth for these last days been fruit-bearing trees of righteousness? Why are they not bearing much fruit to the glory of God? Why are they not abiding in Christ and going on from strength to strength, from character to character? The Word of the Lord to His people is, “Be strong in the Lord and in the power of his might. Put on the whole armor of God, that ye may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil.” [Ephesians 6:10, 11.] Why are the people thus addressed degenerating into weakness and inefficiency, not having the love of Christ burning upon the altar of their hearts, and therefore unable to kindle love in the hearts of others?

Wherefore be ye not unwise, but understanding what the will of the Lord is.” [Verses 15-17.] Had you not better now, in California, draw nigh to God, and obtain spiritual eyesight to discern Satan’s snares? “For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places.” [Ephesians 6:12.]

Signing the Temperance Pledge

EGWE 271.4

The Swiss Conference continued until March 8. During the nearly three weeks of the session Ellen White spoke 17 times. Apparently there were some obstreperous and harsh spirits to be conquered, for Ellen White felt the need for words to be spoken about kindness and patience, and on Sunday, March 6, she addressed the workers from Ephesians 6:10-12. Then she wrote: “My mind was taken into a channel wholly unexpectedly to me upon the subject of patience and kindness and forbearance with one another.”—Manuscript 29, 1887.

When the messengers of God bear the message to the churches and to the world and the aggressive movement arouses the hostility of the powers of darkness and the confederacy of evil men who unite with satanic agencies, it is then we may fully comprehend the weighty words of the apostle Paul to the Ephesians, “Finally, my brethren, be strong in the Lord, and in the power of his might. There has not been that work done with God requires of human intelligences. The first attempt to change the old customs and practices has brought severe trials upon those who would walk in the way which God has pointed out; but young men should understand that as soldier’s life is one of aggressive warfare, of perseverance, and endurance. It is not mimic battles in which we are engaged. Says the apostle: “Finally, my brethren, be strong in the Lord, and in the power of his might. [Ephesians 2:1-10; 6:10-13, quoted.] God is represented as weighing the characters, actions, and motives of men. Christ said to Nicodemus, “Ye must be born again” (John 3:7). He is speaking the same words to those who know not the spirit that moves them to action. Under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit, Hannah, the mother of Samuel, said, “The Lord is a God of knowledge, and by Him actions are weighed” (1 Samuel 2:3). David says, “Men of low degree are vanity, and men of high degree are a lie; to be laid in the balance, they are altogether lighter than vanity” (Psalm 62:9). Isaiah declares, “Thou, most upright, dost weigh the path of the just” (Isaiah 26:7). And Solomon writes, “All the ways of a man are clean in his own eyes; but the Lord weigheth the spirits” (Proverbs 16:2).

These words inspired of God are appropriate for us. They apply in a special manner to those who are endeavoring to keep the commandments of God amidst a crooked and perverse nation, among whom they shine as lights in the world. O, how solemn, how fearfully solemn, is this time for the youth among us who have had great light, and for those who stand as watchmen upon the walls of Zion that their words, spirit, and character shall not be misleading to those with whom they associate and to those with whom they are brought in contact. The inspired apostle continues, “Wherefore” in consideration of the warfare against, “not flesh and blood” but satanic agencies, disguised, “take unto you the whole armor of God.” [Verses 12, 13.] Make your guide the Word. “Take” it.

But great discernment is needed that the girdle should be the golden chain of truth, “and having on the breast-plate of righteousness,” not your own but the righteousness of Christ. [Verse 14.] This is the fortress of the soul. We may with Christ’s righteousness going before us withstand the moral darkness and penetrate the devices of the satanic agencies. “And your feet shod with the preparation of the gospel of peace.” [Verse 15.]

In the hour of need we can gain no power by looking to ourselves. Our eyes need to be anointed with the heavenly eye-salve, that we may discern our spiritual poverty and lack of faith. God is declared in all His dealings with His people, and with clear unclouded eye; in adversity and sickness; in disappointment and in trial, as well as in prosperity, we are to behold the light of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ, and trust to His guiding hand. Remember the power and love God has shown us in the past. He “so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in Him should not perish, but have everlasting life” (John 3:16). We are to keep this in mind. Although all our strength in the Christian life comes from God, we are to act our individual part in this work. We are to cherish and strengthen our consciousness of our individual duty to have strength, because this is a spiritual warfare with invisible foes. The help has been provided “in the power of His might.” [Verse 10.] All the spiritual consciousness is to be strengthened by a continual, increasing faith. In our warfare with invisible foes, we are to look to God continually and by faith plead His assurance. With all humility we are to hang our helpless souls upon the invisible power, pleading because we have taken the whole armor, every piece of it. With the shield of faith we shall be able to quench all the fiery darts of the wicked from whatsoever source they may come. The Word of the Lord is our defense.

22LtMs, Ms 162, 1907, par. 6

We must make the Word of God the man of our counsel. If we move intelligently, we must move understandingly in the resistance of invisible powers, above all taking the shield of intelligent faith “wherewith ye shall be able to quench all the fiery darts of the wicked.” [Verse 16.]

Imperfections in education as to what constitutes true manliness and true womanliness in the Christian life is the cause of many failing and falling. When you leave the school you will need to place yourselves daily under the watchcare of God. Never suppose you are sufficient to be wise and good of yourself. God will take charge of you if you will commit your souls to His keeping. Do not ever undervalue the impressions you have received during this term of school, as the Scriptures have been opened to you and precious light has shone forth in distinct and clear lines. Faith and works are needed now in clear, distinct lines. While light is being given amid the moral darkness, we must gather every distinct ray of light that will substantiate the truth, bearing aloft the banner for these last days, the third angel’s message. The churches need to be set in order, the door of unbelief to be closed. The seducing power of Satan, we are told, will increase in such proportions that if it is possible he will deceive the very elect. Some are not making straight paths for their feet, and in consequence the weak will be turned out of the way. Let every soul take the warnings. 2 Corinthians 1:6, 15-18; 11:14; Galatians 6:1-9; Ephesians 4:1-32; 6:10-17; 2 Timothy.

It is Sabbath day. I am this day seventy-seven years old. I have thinking to do and I have reason to thank the Lord that He has spared my life. I am pleased that the Lord has favored me with His encouraging grace. I have been sick for more than one week with influenza. Have kept my room much of the time. I have been repenting during this more than a week of suffering. My throat and lungs have oft been under congestion, my cough is hard and dry; expectorate but little. My labors have been quite taxing, and the Lord has greatly blessed me. During the night season we were in counsel. After we were planning what we should do, there was One who spoke with clearness and laid out the work that, while my life is spared, we shall secure a home for myself and workers, that W. C. White’s time and energies need not be divorced from the work being carried forward and upward. The special energies and capabilities are to be exercised to get out the books that are essential for this last time. We were to place ourselves in the very best possible position for health and for clear, bright spirituality. Faith and works are needed now in clear, distinct lines. His grace is to enable us to perform faithfully every duty. In the power of His might we are to conquer every foe. It is our privilege and duty as children of God to grow in grace, and in the strength of the experience that God is waiting to give every one who will use unselfishly the blessings bestowed, brightening with hope and courage the lives of those ready to die.

From my text we see that “we wrestle not against flesh and blood.” [Ephesians 6:12.] We meet the opposition of men, but there is someone behind that opposition. It is the prince of the powers of darkness with his evil angels that are constantly at work; and we want to consider, all of us, that our warfare is against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world. Who is it that is ruling the world today? And who is it that have chosen to stand under the banner of the prince of darkness? Why, it is nearly the whole world at large. All the world that have not accepted Jesus Christ have chosen for their leader the prince of darkness; and just as soon as they stand under his banner, they have connection with evil angels.

Our Instructor placed his hand on Brother Jones’s shoulder, and said, “My brother, should you leave the position you now occupy, great injustice would be done. Those of your associates who have had so much to say in criticism would think their words true. You can honor God now by being ‘strong in the Lord, and in the power of his might.’ [Ephesians 6:10.]

17LtMs, Lt 65, 1902, par. 10

“‘Put on the whole armor of God, that ye may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil. For we wrestle not against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of darkness in this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places. Wherefore take unto you the whole armor of God, that ye may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand. Stand therefore, having your loins girt about with truth, and having on the breastplate of righteousness; and your feet shod with the preparation of the gospel of peace; above all, taking the shield of faith, wherewith ye shall be able to quench all the fiery darts of the wicked. And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God; praying always with all prayer and supplications in the Spirit, and watching thereunto with all perseverance and supplication for all saints.’” [Verses 11-18.]

There is a warfare for every soul. It is to fight inch by inch the good fight of faith by the weapons of the Word of God, “It is written.” Keep the storehouse of the mind well supplied with “It is written.” Thus meet every advance of the enemy, and you are in this educating and training the soul for more stern tactics of the enemy. Truth, the Word of God, Faith in His Word is to be your armor and furnish you with weapons of warfare, and you will be supplied with a sensitiveness and keen perception that you will not be ignorant of Satan’s devices. “But having done all to stand.” “Finally my brethren, be strong in the Lord and the power of his might.” “Put on the whole armor of God that ye may be able to stand against the wiles of the Devil.” [Ephesians 6:13, 10, 11.]

8LtMs, Lt 41, 1893, par. 27

If the provision has not been made for you that you may be thoroughly equipped, then these words only tantalize you. But our God is true. We may depend upon Him under every and all circumstances. The word of God is to be studied and it is to be our assurance. It is the weapon of our warfare in wholly and completely overcoming every temptation of the enemy. Satan presents every worldly attraction, every lying, deceiving bribe that he shall eclipse and intercept your view of Jesus Christ and His plainest requirements. Ephesians 6:12-18.

Paul sums up his instruction to the Ephesians by saving, “Finally, my brethren, be strong in the Lord,” not in self, “and in the power of his might,” not in self-confidence and self-sufficiency. “Put on the whole armor of God, that ye may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil. For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities and powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places.” [Ephesians 6:10-12.] How many think of these words when engaged in camp meeting work? O, if all would only put on the whole armor of God, what wonderful victories would be gained.

15LtMs, Ms 16, 1900, par. 38

“Wherefore take unto you the whole armor of God, that ye may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all”—having obeyed the instruction given by the Lord through His servants—“to stand. Stand therefore, having your loins girt about with truth, and having on the breastplate of righteousness; and your feet shod with the preparation of the gospel of peace.” [Verses 13-15.] Let the peace of Christ rule in the heart and express itself in words and works of praise and thanksgiving. The peace of Christ in the heart will be revealed by the true child of God. Christlike words and deeds are the fruit the Saviour longs to see in His followers. There is no excuse for spiritual dearth in the soul. The peace of Christ, which passeth understanding, is provided for all.

15LtMs, Ms 16, 1900, par. 39

“Above all, taking the shield of faith, wherewith ye shall be able to quench all the fiery darts of the wicked.” [Verse 16.] Satan is on the ground, for the purpose of hindered those present from gaining the spiritual attainments which they may receive. Confidence in God, a constant exercise of faith, will quench his fiery darts.

15LtMs, Ms 16, 1900, par. 40

“And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit”—presented to you by the Captain of the Lord’s host—“which is the word of God.” [Verse 17.]

15LtMs, Ms 16, 1900, par. 41

God stands ready to furnish His children with light and grace and power. Every soldier in the army of the Lord is to stand firm in the faith, working out his own salvation with fear and trembling, knowing that God is working in him, to will and to do of His good pleasure. God’s soldiers are to be ever ready with the word, “It is written.” When assailed by the enemy, they are not to use words human wisdom, but words of divine wisdom, keeping the eyes fixed on Christ. And they work to press back the powers of darkness, they are to pray always, “with all prayer and supplication in the Spirit, and watching thereunto with all perseverance and supplication for all saints.” [Verse 18.]

I am constrained to write you some things, not to discourage, but to lead you to gird on more firmly the heavenly armor. “Finally, my brethren, be strong in the Lord, and in the power of his might.” [Ephesians 6:10.] There is no limit to the power of the Lord. He is invincible; He is your strong tower. Into Him you can run and be safe. “Put on the whole armor of God, that ye may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil.” [Verse 11.] Never forget that there is One by your side who is mighty in battle; and although there may be unseen foes seeking to overcome us, we need not falter nor fail. “We wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places.” [Verse 12.]

The truth which is being preached will bring increased bitterness and opposition. Much depends upon your attitude in regard to this. God wants you to stand at your post as a faithful sentinel, and give the enemy no quarter. Now, as never before, we must show on our uplifted banner the commandments of God and the faith of Jesus. “Wherefore take unto you the whole armor of God, that ye may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand. Stand therefore, having your loins girt about with truth, and having on the breastplate of righteousness; and your feet shod with the preparation of the gospel of peace. Gather to yourself fewer responsibilities, and be careful not to give anyone by your example an occasion for stumbling. “Be strong in the Lord.” [Ephesians 6:10.] Plead with God. Wrestle with Him as did Jacob, saying, “I will not let Thee go except Thou bless me.” [Genesis 32:26.] Put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to stand against the wiles of the enemy. “We wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places. Wherefore take unto you the whole armor of God, that ye may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all to stand. The Lord, speaking through Paul, Ephesians 6:10-18, tells us how to fortify ourselves against Satan and his emissaries: “Finally, my brethren, be strong in the Lord, and in the power of His might. Put on the whole armor of God, that ye may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil. For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places. Wherefore take unto you the whole armor of God, that ye may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand. Rebellion and Apostasy

1NL 58.5

The doctrines must be plainly understood. The men accepted to preach the truth must be anchored; then their vessel will hold against storm and tempest, because the anchor holds them firmly. The deceptions will increase, and we are to call rebellion by its right name. We are to stand with the whole armor on. In this conflict we do not meet men only, but principalities and powers. We wrestle not against flesh and blood. Let Ephesians 6:10-18 be read carefully and impressively in our churches.

There are ways that the time of the students can be employed that their young zeal and youthful ardor can be used to glorify God. Thus was it in the school of the prophets. All their powers were trained and consecrated to service. Here is education that we shall need in the day of trial coming upon us as a thief in the night, stealing unawares. 1 Thessalonians 5:1-9; 2 Peter 3:10-14; Revelation 3:2-4. Ephesians 6:10-18; Philippians 2:12-16; Titus 2:6-8, 11-15. I write you, referring to these scriptures. [I] have not time to write them out in full.

Wednesday was a taxing day in getting matter off to my workers, Fannie and Marian, at Melbourne. I sent a large package of manuscript for the papers, and short letters. This, with the labor the previous day, was too much for my strength. But nevertheless, I felt that I must be at this morning meeting. I had words to speak to the people. I presented before them Ephesians 6:10-18. These words seemed to me very important to every soldier enlisted under the blood-stained banner of Prince Immanuel. I am certain that others regarded the words as appropriate and applicable to them personally. I told them this was the prescription given them from the Captain of our salvation, our great Healer, that they should have spiritual health and power that the enemy should not overcome any one of them.

This history should be studied by all the children of God. We are not to be ignorant of Satan’s devices, but we are to understand the working of the satanic powers by which if possible, the evil one may be able to take advantage of the people of God, and lead them to trust in their facilities and in the strength of their organizations and institutions, and not depend wholly upon the Lord God of Israel, who is their stronghold in every emergency. And now as Satan has come down in great power to work with his deceiving artifice and delusions to deceive if possible, the very elect, all the children of God must be armed with faith and prayer. “Finally my brethren, be strong in the Lord and in the power of his might. Put on the whole armor of God, that ye may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil. On Sabbath, November 21, I spoke to the people in Newtown. We had a precious meeting. The Lord gave me great freedom. Sunday evening I departed from my usual custom and consented to speak in the chapel at Ashfield. I had my text selected, (Ephesians 6:10-18), and had read it only five minutes before I opened my Bible in the pulpit. But when I stood before the people, I opened to another Scripture, (1 Corinthians 9:24-27), and read it as if this were the subject I had designed to speak upon.
