Context of Acts 9:27
25However, Saul’s disciples lowered him in a large basket through an opening in the wall one night. 26After Saul arrived in Jerusalem, he tried to join the disciples. But everyone was afraid of him. They wouldn’t believe that he was a disciple. Then Barnabas took an interest in Saul and brought him to the apostles. Barnabas told the apostles how Saul had seen the Lord on the road and that the Lord had spoken to him. Barnabas also told them how boldly Saul had spoken about the one named Jesus in the city of Damascus. 28Then Saul went throughout Jerusalem with the disciples. He spoke boldly with the power and authority of the Lord. 29He talked and argued with Greek-speaking Jews, but they tried to murder him.

Commentaries on Acts 9:27
- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 27Barnabas - brought him to the apostles - That is, to Peter and James; for others of the apostles he saw none, Galatians 1:19. It appears that he went up at this time to Jerusalem merely to see Peter, with whom he abode fifteen days, Galatians 1:18. How it came that the apostles and Church at Jerusalem had not heard of Saul's conversion, which had taken place three years before, is not easy to be accounted for. The following considerations may help; It is…Read the comment
- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 27But Barnabas - See the notes on Acts 4:36. Barnabas was of Cyprus, not far from Tarsus, and it is not improbable that he had been before acquainted with Saul. To the apostles - To Peter and James, Galatians 1:18-19. Probably the other apostles were at that time absent from Jerusalem. And declared unto them - It may seem remarkable that the apostles at Jerusalem had not before heard of the conversion of Saul. The following considerations may serve in…Read the comment
- Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 23-31Verses 23-31 When we enter into the way of God, we must look for trials; but the Lord knows how to deliver the godly, and will, with the temptation, also make a way to escape. Though Saul's conversion was and is a proof of the truth of Christianity, yet it could not, of itself, convert one soul at enmity with the truth; for nothing can produce true faith, but that power which new-creates the heart. Believers are apt to be too suspicious of those against…Read the comment
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 26-28When Saul arrived in Jerusalem: The believers did not trust him at first. This was understandable. He had recently attacked and imprisoned Christians (8:3; 9:1, 13; 22:3, 4; 26:9–11). Barnabas helped him. Barnabas, whose name means “Son of Encouragement” (4:36), brought Saul to the apostles. He told them how Saul had seen the Lord on the road to Damascus. He also explained how Saul had preached boldly in the name of Jesus there. Barnabas convinced the…Read the comment
- Jamieson–Fausset–Brown Commentary · v. 2727. But Barnabas ... brought him to the apostles--that is, to Peter and James; for "other of the apostles saw I none," says he fourteen years after (Ga 1:18, 19). Probably none of the other apostles were there at the time (Ac 4:36). Barnabas being of Cyprus, which was within a few hours' sail of Cilicia, and annexed to it as a Roman province, and Saul and he being Hellenistic Jews and eminent in their respective localities, they may very well have been…Read the comment
