Context of Romans 15:9
7Therefore, [continue to] accept and welcome one another, just as Christ has accepted and welcomed us to the glory of [our great] God. 8For I tell you that Christ has become a servant and a minister to the circumcision (Jews) on behalf of God’s truth, to confirm and verify the promises made to the fathers, and for the Gentiles to glorify God for His mercy [to them, since God had no covenant with them]. As it is written and forever remains written, “Therefore I praise You among the Gentiles, And sing praises to Your name.” 10Again it says, “Rejoice and celebrate, O Gentiles, along with His people.” 11And again, “Praise the Lord all you Gentiles, And let all the peoples praise Him!”

- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 9And that the Gentiles might glorify God for his mercy - As the Jews were to glorify God for his truth, so the Gentiles were to glorify God for his mercy. The Jews received the blessings of the Gospel by right of promise, which promise God had most punctually and circumstantially fulfilled. The Gentiles had received the same Gospel as an effect of God's mere mercy, having no right in consequence of any promise or engagement made with any of their…Read the comment
- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 9And that the Gentiles - The benefits of the gospel were not to be confined to “the Jews;” and as God “designed” that those benefits should be extended to the “Gentiles,” so the Jewish converts ought to be willing to admit them and treat them as brethren. That God “did” design this, the apostle proceeds to show. Might glorify God - Might “praise,” or give thanks to God. This implies that the favor shown to them was a “great” favor. For his mercy - Greek…Read the comment
- Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 8-13Verses 8-13 Christ fulfilled the prophecies and promises relating to the Jews, and the Gentile converts could have no excuse for despising them. The Gentiles, being brought into the church, are companions in patience and tribulation. They should praise God. Calling upon all the nations to praise the Lord, shows that they shall have knowledge of him. We shall never seek to Christ till we trust in him. And the whole plan of redemption is suited to reconcile…Read the comment
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 8-9Through Christ, God enabled Jews and Gentiles to unite and glorify him as the new covenant people of God (see chapters 9–11). The issue of Jewish and Gentile relationships was central to the disagreement in the Roman church (14:1–15:7).Read the comment
- Jamieson–Fausset–Brown Commentary · v. 8-128-12. Now--"For" is the true reading: the apostle is merely assigning an additional motive to Christian forbearance. I say that Jesus Christ was--"hath become" a minister of the circumcision--a remarkable expression, meaning "the Father's Servant for the salvation of the circumcision (or, of Israel)." for the truth of God--to make good the veracity of God towards His ancient people. to confirm the--Messianic promises made unto the fathers--To cheer the…Read the comment
