Context of Mark 15:23
21When the soldiers were taking Jesus out to that place, a man called Simon was there. He was coming in from outside the city. He was from the city of Cyrene, and he was the father of Alexander and Rufus. The soldiers told Simon that he must carry Jesus' cross. 22The soldiers took Jesus to a place that is called Golgotha. (Golgotha means ‘the place of a skull’.) They tried to give Jesus some wine to drink. They had mixed some medicine called myrrh into the wine. But Jesus would not drink it. 24Then the soldiers fixed Jesus onto the cross. They took his clothes for themselves. They played a game to decide which soldier would receive each of his clothes. 25It was about nine o'clock in the morning when the soldiers fixed Jesus to the cross.

- Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 22-32Verses 22-32 The place where our Lord Jesus was crucified, was called the place of a scull; it was the common place of execution; for he was in all respects numbered with the transgressors. Whenever we look unto Christ crucified, we must remember what was written over his head; he is a King, and we must give up ourselves to be his subjects, as Israelites indeed. They crucified two thieves with him, and him in the midst; they thereby intended him great…Read the comment
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 23It is uncertain if people offered Jesus wine mixed with myrrh as a kind act or to mock him (Proverbs 31:6). Jesus refused the calming drink mixture because he had committed himself to accept the suffering God had given him (Mark 10:38–39; 14:36). People have used myrrh since before the time of Jesus to treat wounds, infections, and digestive problems.Read the comment
