Context of Matthew 27:34
32When they were going to that place, they met a man called Simon. He came from the city of Cyrene. The Roman soldiers told Simon that he must carry Jesus' cross. 33The soldiers took Jesus to the place that is called Golgotha. (Golgotha means the place of a skull. ) They tried to give Jesus some wine to drink. They had mixed some medicine into the wine. Jesus tasted it, but he would not drink it. 35Then the soldiers fixed Jesus onto the cross. They took his clothes for themselves. They played a game to find out who would receive each piece of his clothes. 36Then the soldiers sat down and they watched Jesus carefully.

Commentaries on Matthew 27:34
- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 34They gave him vinegar - mingled with gall - Perhaps , commonly translated gall, signifies no more than bitters of any kind. It was a common custom to administer a stupefying potion compounded of sour wine, which is the same as vinegar, from the French vinaigre, frankincense, and myrrh, to condemned persons, to help to alleviate their sufferings, or so disturb their intellect that they might not be sensible of them. The rabbins say that they put a grain of…Read the comment
- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 34They gave him vinegar - Mark says that, “they gave him to drink wine mingled with myrrh.” The two evangelists mean the same thing. Vinegar was made of light wine rendered acid, and was the common drink of the Roman soldiers, and this might be called either vinegar or wine in common language. “Myrrh” is a bitter substance produced in Arabia, but is used often to denote anything bitter. The meaning of the name is “bitterness.” See the notes at Matthew…Read the comment
- Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 31-34Verses 31-34 Christ was led as a Lamb to the slaughter, as a Sacrifice to the altar. Even the mercies of the wicked are really cruel. Taking the cross from him, they compelled one Simon to bear it. Make us ready, O Lord, to bear the cross thou hast appointed us, and daily to take it up with cheerfulness, following thee. Was ever sorrow like unto his sorrow? And when we behold what manner of death he died, let us in that behold with what manner of love he…Read the comment
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 34They probably gave Jesus wine mixed with bitter gall to ridicule him (see Psalm 69:21). It also was a sedative. Jesus probably refused it so he could fully experience suffering for our sins (see Isaiah 53:10). Gall is another name sometimes given to wormwood. It is a very bitter substance made from the oil of the Artemisia plant, sometimes used as medicine in the ancient world (compare Mark 15:23).Read the comment
