Context of Luke 14:18
16Jesus told this story to him: ‘One day an important man prepared a big meal. He asked many people to come to eat in his house. 17When the meal was ready, he sent his servant out to tell those people, “Come now, the meal is ready for you.” But then each person gave a reason why he could not come to the meal. The first man said, “I have bought a field, so I must go out and see it. Please say that I am sorry. Tell your master that I cannot come to his meal.” 19The next man said, “I have bought five pairs of oxen. So I am just going out to see if they work well together. Please say that I am sorry. Tell your master that I cannot come to his meal.” 20The third man said, “I have just married a wife. That is why I cannot come to the meal.”

- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 18I have bought a piece of ground - Perhaps he had purchased it on condition that he found it as good as it had been represented to him. I must needs go - I have necessity, or am obliged to go and see it; possibly pleading a contract or an agreement that he would go soon and examine it. However, we may learn from this that sinners sometimes plead that they are under a “necessity” to neglect the affairs of religion. The affairs of the world, they pretend…Read the comment
- Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 15-24Verses 15-24 In this parable observe the free grace and mercy of God shining in the gospel of Christ, which will be food and a feast for the soul of a man that knows its own wants and miseries. It shows also the backwardness there is to close with the gospel call. The want of gratitude in those who slight gospel offers…Read the comment

Our Lord's reply is in substance this: "The great Feast is prepared already; the invitations are issued, but declined; the feast, notwithstanding, shall not want abundance of guests; but not one of…Read the comment
