Context of Luke 11:27
25Then it goes back to that person. It finds that the place is empty. Everything there is now good and clean. 26So the bad spirit goes out and it brings back seven other spirits. They are even worse than itself. They all go into the person and they live there. Now the person's life is even worse than it was before.’ While Jesus was saying this, a woman in the crowd shouted out. ‘How happy is the woman that gave birth to you! How happy is the woman that fed you from her breasts!’ 28Jesus replied, ‘It is the people who hear God's message who are happy. They are happy if they obey it.’ 29The crowd around Jesus was growing very large, so he began to speak to them. ‘The people that are alive today are very bad,’ he said. ‘They want God to show them something powerful. But God will not do this for them. They will only see the same powerful thing that God did for Jonah.

Commentaries on Luke 11:27
- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 27A certain woman - lifted up her voice, and said - It was very natural for a woman, who was probably a mother, to exclaim thus. She thought that the happiness of the woman who was mother to such a son was great indeed; but our blessed Lord shows her that even the holy virgin could not be benefited by her merely being the mother of his human nature, and that they only were happy who carried Christ in their hearts. True happiness is found in hearing the glad…Read the comment
- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 27A certain woman - One of the crowd. Blessed is the womb - She thought that the “mother” of such a person must be especially happy in having such a son. Yea, rather blessed - Jesus admits that she was happy - that it was an honor to be his mother, but he says that the chief happiness, the highest honor, was to obey the word of God. Compared with this, all earthly distinctions and honors are as nothing. Man‘s greatest dignity is in keeping the holy…Read the comment
- Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 27-28Verses 27-28 While the scribes and Pharisees despised and blasphemed the discourses of our Lord Jesus, this good woman admired them, and the wisdom and power with which he spake. Christ led the woman to a higher consideration. Though it is a great privilege to hear the word of God, yet those only are truly blessed, that is, blessed of the Lord, that hear it, keep it in memory, and keep to it as their way and rule.Read the comment
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 14-32Jesus faced two challenges. He answered the first, an accusation that he was driving out demons by Satan's power (11:15), in 11:17–26. The second was a demand for "a sign from heaven" (11:16). He answered this in 11:29–32.Read the comment
- Jamieson–Fausset–Brown Commentary · v. 27-2827-28. as he spake these things, a ... woman of the company--of the multitude, the crowd. A charming little incident and profoundly instructive. With true womanly feeling, she envies the mother of such a wonderful Teacher. Well, and higher and better than she had said as much before her (Lu 1:28, 42); and our Lord is far from condemning it. He only holds up--as "blessed rather"--the hearers and keepers of God's word; in other words, the humblest real…Read the comment
