Context of Luke 1:61
59When the child was eight days old, people met together to circumcise him. They wanted to call the child Zechariah. This was the same name that his father had. 60Elizabeth said, ‘No. His name will be John.’ They replied, ‘But you do not have anyone in your family called John. That cannot be right.’ 62So they used their hands to make signs to the baby's father. They wanted to ask him what his son's name should be. 63Zechariah asked for something to write on. He wrote, ‘His name is John.’ Everyone was very surprised at what he wrote.

Commentaries on Luke 1:61
- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 61None of thy kindred - As the Jewish tribes and families were kept sacredly distinct, it appears the very names of the ancestors were continued among their descendants, partly through reverence for them, and partly to avoid confusion in the genealogical tables, which, for the sake of distinguishing the inheritances, were carefully preserved in each of the families. It seems to be on this account that the neighbors and relatives objected to a name which had…Read the comment
- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 61There is none of thy kindred - The Jewish tribes and families were kept distinct. To do this, and to avoid confusion in their genealogical tables, they probably gave only those names which were found among their ancestors. Another reason for this, common to all people, is the respect which is felt for honored parents and ancestors.Read the comment
- Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 57-66Verses 57-66 In these verses we have an account of the birth of John the Baptist, and the great joy among all the relations of the family. He shall be called Johanan, or "Gracious," because he shall bring in the gospel of Christ, wherein God's grace shines most bright. Zacharias recovered his speech. Unbelief closed his mouth, and believing opened it again: he believers, therefore he speaks. When God opens our lips, our mouths must show forth his praise…Read the comment
- Jamieson–Fausset–Brown Commentary · v. 57-8059. eighth day--The law (Ge 17:12) was observed, even though the eighth day after birth should be a sabbath (Joh 7:23; and see Php 3:5). called him--literally, "were calling"--that is, (as we should say) "were for calling." The naming of children at baptism has its origin in the Jewish custom at circumcision (Ge 21:3, 4); and the names of Abram and Sarai were changed at its first performance (Ge 17:5, 15).Read the comment
