Context of Hebrews 10:9
7Then I said, “Here I am, my God. I have come to do what you want. That is what it says about me in the Bible.” ’ 8So think about what Christ said there. First he said to God, ‘You have not wanted gifts and sacrifices of animals. Any kind of sacrifice like that does not make you happy.’ But we know that Moses' rules taught about those sacrifices. God's law said that they were necessary. Then Christ said, ‘Here I am. I have come to do what you want.’ In that way, Christ took away the first agreement and its rules about sacrifices. Christ's sacrifice of his own body is the new way that God forgives our sins. 10Jesus Christ was ready to do what God wanted. He offered his own body to God once, for all time. Because of Christ's sacrifice, God has made us clean so that we belong to him. 11Every day, the priests do their work to serve God. They offer the same sacrifices to God again and again. But those sacrifices can never take away people's sins.

Cross-references for Hebrews 10:9
- Hebrews 9:11But now Christ has come as our special priest. He brings us the good things that are now here. He has gone into God's own place in heaven. That is a greater and much better tent than the old tabernacle. No person made this tent. It does not belong to this world at all.
- Hebrews 7:18So the old law about priests no longer has authority. It was weak and it could not help people.
- Hebrews 8:7If there had been nothing wrong with that first agreement, then nobody would have needed a second agreement.
- Hebrews 12:27These words, ‘once again,’ show us that God will take away the things that he has made. All things on the earth that he causes to shake will finish. After that, everything that nobody can shake will continue to be there.

- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 9He taketh away the first - The offerings, sacrifices, burnt-offerings, and sacrifices for sin, which were prescribed by the law. That he may establish the second - The offering of the body of Jesus once for all. It will make little odds in the meaning if we say, he taketh away the first covenant, that he may establish the second covenant; he takes away the first dispensation, that he may establish the second; he takes away the law, that he may establish…Read the comment
- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 9Then said he - In another part of the passage quoted. When he had said that no offering which man could make would avail, then he said that he would come himself. He taketh away the first - The word “first” here refers to sacrifices and offerings. He takes them away; that is, he shows that they are of no value in removing sin. He states their inefficacy, and declares his purpose to abolish them. That he may establish the second - To wit, the doing of the…Read the comment
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 8-10The author of Hebrews carefully follows the order of thought in the psalm. In the passage above He says, "Sacrifices and offerings, burnt offerings and sin offerings You did not desire…": The author of Hebrews sees this as God rejecting the old system of sacrifices. Then He adds, “Here I am, I have come to do Your will.”: The author of Hebrews interprets this as Christ's willingness to be the ultimate sacrifice for sins. The author of Hebrews concludes…Read the comment
- Jamieson–Fausset–Brown Commentary · v. 99. Then said he--"At that time (namely, when speaking by David's mouth in the fortieth Psalm) He hath said." The rejection of the legal sacrifices involves, as its concomitant, the voluntary offer of Jesus to make the self-sacrifice with which God is well pleased (for, indeed, it was God's own "will" that He came to do in offering it: so that this sacrifice could not but be well pleasing to God). I come--"I am come." taketh away--"sets aside the first,"…Read the comment
