Context of Acts 8:29
27So Philip started on his journey. While he was going along this road, he met an important officer from Ethiopia. This man had authority over the queen of Ethiopia's money. The queen was called Candace. The officer was travelling home from Jerusalem. He had been there to worship God. 28Now the man was travelling home again in his chariot. He was reading something from the book that God's prophet Isaiah wrote. The Holy Spirit said to Philip, ‘Go to that chariot and walk beside it.’ 30So Philip ran to the cart as it went along. The officer was reading aloud from the prophet Isaiah's book and Philip heard him. So Philip asked the man, ‘Do you understand the things that you are reading about?’ 31The man answered, ‘I cannot understand it. I need someone to explain it to me.’ Then he said to Philip, ‘Come up here and sit with me in the cart.’

Commentaries on Acts 8:29
- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 29Then the Spirit said unto Philip - This holy man having obeyed the first direction he received from God, and gone southward without knowing the reason why, it was requisite that he should now be informed of the object of his mission: the Spirit said unto him, go near, and join thyself, etc. The angel who had given him the first direction had departed; and the influence of the Holy Spirit now completed the information. It is likely that what the Spirit did…Read the comment
- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 29The Spirit - See the notes on Acts 8:26. The Holy Spirit is evidently intended here. The thought in Philip‘s mind is here traced to his suggestion. All good thoughts and designs have the same origin. Join thyself - Join him in his chariot. Go and sit with him.Read the comment
- Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 26-40Verses 26-40 Philip was directed to go to a desert. Sometimes God opens a door of opportunity to his ministers in very unlikely places. We should study to do good to those we come into company with by travelling. We should not be so shy of all strangers as some affect to be. As to those of whom we know nothing else, we know this, that they have souls. It is wisdom for men of business to redeem time for holy duties; to fill up every minute with something…Read the comment
