Context of Acts 17:34
32Paul had said, ‘God caused that man to live again.’ When the people heard this, some of them laughed at him. But other people said to Paul, ‘We want you to tell us more about this on another day.’ 33So then Paul left the meeting of the important officers of the city. Some of the people who had heard Paul's message joined his group. They believed the good news about Jesus. One of these believers was a man called Dionysius. He belonged to the group of important officers. A woman called Damaris also became a believer. Several other people also believed Paul's message about Jesus.

- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 34Certain men clave unto him - Became affectionately united to him, and believed the doctrines he had preached. Dionysius the Areopagite - There can be no doubt that this man was one of the judges of this great court, but whether the president or otherwise we cannot tell. Humanly speaking, his conversion must have been an acquisition of considerable importance to the Christian religion; for no person was a judge in the Areopagus who had not borne the office…Read the comment

The conversion of one man was worth the labor of Paul, and that conversion might have had an extensive influence on others. In regard to this account of the visit of Paul to…Read the comment
- Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 32-34Verses 32-34 The apostle was treated with more outward civility at Athens than in some other places; but none more despised his doctrine, or treated it with more indifference. Of all subjects, that which deserves the most attention gains the least. But those who scorn, will have to bear the consequences, and the word will never be useless. Some will be found, who cleave to the Lord, and listen to his faithful servants. Considering the judgement to come…Read the comment
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 34some joined him and believed: Some people joined Paul and became believers. His sermon did not only bring rejection; it also led to faith. By pairing men and women, he shows that both are equally important in God’s work (for example, 5:1–11; 17:4, 12; Luke 14:1–6…Read the comment
- Jamieson–Fausset–Brown Commentary · v. 32-3432-34. when they heard of the resurrection of the dead, some mocked--As the Greek religion was but the glorification of the present life, by the worship of all its most beauteous forms, the Resurrection, which presupposes the vanity of the present life, and is nothing but life out of the death of all that sin has blighted, could have no charm for the true Greek. It gave the death blow to his fundamental and most cherished ideas; nor until these were seen…Read the comment
