Context of Acts 14:19
17But God has showed everybody very clearly what he is like. He has showed you that he is kind. He causes the rain to fall from the sky. He causes the plants to give you food at the right time each year. He gives you plenty of food to eat. In these ways he makes you very happy.’ 18Even when Paul had said all this, the people still wanted to offer sacrifices to him and Barnabas. Finally Paul and Barnabas were able to stop them. Then some Jews arrived there in Lystra. They had travelled from Antioch and from Iconium. They talked to the people, so that they turned against Paul. Then these Jews threw stones at Paul to kill him. They pulled his body to outside the town. They thought that he was dead. 20But some believers came out from the town and they stood around Paul. Then Paul stood up! He went back with them into the town. The next day, Paul and Barnabas left Lystra and they went to Derbe. 21While they were there, they told people the good news about Jesus. Many people in Derbe became believers. After that, Paul and Barnabas returned to Lystra. From there they went back to Iconium. Then they returned to Antioch in the region of Pisidia.

Commentaries on Acts 14:19
- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 19There came thither certain Jews from Antioch - Those were, no doubt, the same who had raised up persecution against Paul and Barnabas, at Iconium and Antioch, before: they followed the apostles with implacable malice; and what they could not do themselves they endeavored to do by others, whose minds they first perverted, and then irritated to deeds of fell purpose. And having stoned Paul - Alas! of what real worth is popular fame? How uncertain, and how…Read the comment
- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 19And there came thither certain Jews - Not satisfied with having expelled them from Antioch and Iconium, they still pursued them. Persecutors often exhibit a zeal and perseverance in a bad cause which it would be well if Christians evinced in a holy cause. Bad people will often travel further to do evil than good people will to do good; and wicked people often show more zeal in opposing the gospel than professed Christians do in advancing it. Antioch and…Read the comment
- Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 19-28Verses 19-28 See how restless the rage of the Jews was against the gospel of Christ. The people stoned Paul, in a popular tumult. So strong is the bent of the corrupt and carnal heart, that as it is with great difficulty that men are kept back from evil on one side, so it is with great ease they are persuaded to evil on the other side. If Paul would have been Mercury, he might have been worshipped; but if he will be a faithful minister of Christ, he shall…Read the comment
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 19-20The crowd changed their minds when some Jews came from Antioch and Iconium and easily turned them against the apostles. They stoned Paul and dragged him outside the city: Paul later referred to this time of persecution to teach a lesson (2 Timothy 3:11–12). presuming he was dead: That Paul got up and went back into the city suggests that God healed his wounds with a miracle.Read the comment
- Jamieson–Fausset–Brown Commentary · v. 1919. came thither certain Jews from Antioch and Iconium--Furious zeal that would travel so far to counteract the missionaries of the Cross! persuaded the people--"the multitudes." and having stoned Paul--(See on Ac 14:5). Barnabas they seem to have let alone; Paul, as the prominent actor and speaker, being the object of all their rage. The words seem to imply that it was the Jews who did this; and no doubt they took the lead (Ac 14:19), but it was the act…Read the comment
