Context of Jeremiah 22:19
17‘But you always want to cheat people, so that you can get more riches for yourself. You make plans to kill people who have not done anything wrong. You hurt people in cruel ways.’ 18So the Lord says this about Josiah's son, King Jehoiakim of Judah: ‘People will not weep when he dies. They will not say, “I am very sad, my brother. I am very sad, my sister.” They will not weep and say, “What a terrible thing has happened! Our great king has died!” Instead, they will bury him like a dead donkey. They will pull his dead body to the city's gate. They will throw it on the ground outside Jerusalem.’ 20‘Go up to Lebanon and cry aloud. Shout loudly in Bashan. Cry aloud from the mountains of Moab. The nations that were your lovers have lost their power. 21When you were feeling strong and safe, I warned you that this would happen. But you said, “I refuse to listen to you.” You have been like that since you were young. You have never obeyed me.

- Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 10-19Verses 10-19 Here is a sentence of death upon two kings, the wicked sons of a very pious father. Josiah was prevented from seeing the evil to come in this world, and removed to see the good to come in the other world; therefore, weep not for him, but for his son Shallum, who is likely to live and die a wretched captive. Dying saints may be justly envied, while living sinners are justly pitied. Here also is the doom of Jehoiakim. No doubt it is lawful for…Read the comment

- Jamieson–Fausset–Brown Commentary · v. 1919. burial of an ass--that is, he shall have the same burial as an ass would get, namely, he shall be left a prey for beasts and birds [Jerome]. This is not formally narrated. But 2Ch 36:6 states that "Nebuchadnezzar bound him in fetters to carry him to Babylon"; his treatment there is nowhere mentioned. The prophecy here, and in Jr 36:30, harmonizes these two facts. He was slain by Nebuchadnezzar, who changed his purpose of taking him to Babylon, on the…Read the comment
