Context of Acts 1:19
17Judas belonged to our group of disciples. Jesus chose him to work together with us.’ 18Judas received some money for the bad thing that he did. He bought a field with that money. But he fell down in that field and he died. His body broke open and the inside parts of his body poured out. All the people who lived in Jerusalem heard about his death. So they called that field ‘Akeldama’ in their own language. ‘Akeldama’ means ‘The Field of Blood’. 20Peter then said, ‘This is what King David wrote in the book of Psalms: “Let the house that he lived in become empty, so that nobody lives in it.” David also wrote: “Let somebody else do the job which he did.” ’ 21Peter then said, ‘Because of this, we must choose another man instead of Judas. That man must have been one of our group all the time that the Lord Jesus was with us.

Commentaries on Acts 1:19
- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 19It was known unto all the dwellers at Jerusalem - The repentance of Judas, his dying testimony in behalf of our Lord's innocence, and his tragical death, were publicly known, as was also the transaction about the purchase of the field, and hence arose the name by which at was publicly known. These circumstances must have lessened the credit of the chief priests, and have prepared the public mind to receive the Gospel of the kingdom, when preached to them…Read the comment

- Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 15-26Verses 15-26 The great thing the apostles were to attest to the world, was, Christ's resurrection; for that was the great proof of his being the Messiah, and the foundation of our hope in him. The apostles were ordained, not to wordly dignity and dominion, but to preach Christ, and the power of his resurrection. An appeal was made to God; "Thou, Lord, who knowest the hearts of all men," which we do not; and better than they know their own. It is fit that…Read the comment
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 18-19The account in the Gospel of Matthew is slightly different (Matthew 27:3–10). We can match the two accounts by understanding the priests' purchase of the “Field of Blood” as if they acted on behalf of Judas. Also, Judas may have killed himself by hanging, but he later fell headfirst. Then his body split open, possibly when the rope broke.Read the comment
