8I baptize you with water, but he will baptize you with the Holy Spirit.” 9In those days Jesus came from Nazareth in Galilee and was baptized in the Jordan by John. As soon as he came up out of the water, he saw the heavens being torn open and the Spirit descending on him like a dove. 11And a voice came from heaven: “You are my beloved Son; with you I am well-pleased.” 12Immediately the Spirit drove him into the wilderness.

- Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 9-13Verses 9-13 Christ's baptism was his first public appearance, after he had long lived unknown. How much hidden worth is there, which in this world is not known! But sooner or later it shall be known, as Christ was. He took upon himself the likeness of sinful flesh; and thus, for our sakes, he sanctified himself, that we also might be sanctified, and be baptized with him, Joh 17:19. See how honourably God owned him, when he submitted to John's baptism. He…Read the comment
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 10The phrase the heavens breaking open shows that Jesus has a unique and direct relationship with God the Father. In Mark 15:38, the same verb shows that believers also gain access to God through the death of Jesus. All four Gospels mention the Holy Spirit coming down on Jesus like a dove. The Spirit, who was active in the first creation, now works with Jesus to begin the new creation (Genesis 1:2; Romans 8:15–17; 1 Corinthians 6:11; Ephesians 1:13–14; 2…Read the comment
