Context of Luke 23:33
31For if they do these things when the wood is green, what will happen when it is dry?” 32Two others — criminals — were also led away to be executed with him. When they arrived at the place called The Skull, they crucified him there, along with the criminals, one on the right and one on the left. 34Then Jesus said, “Father, forgive them, because they do not know what they are doing.” And they divided his clothes and cast lots. 35The people stood watching, and even the leaders were scoffing: “He saved others; let him save himself if this is God’s Messiah, the Chosen One!”

- Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 32-43Verses 32-43 As soon as Christ was fastened to the cross, he prayed for those who crucified him. The great thing he died to purchase and procure for us, is the forgiveness of sin. This he prays for. Jesus was crucified between two thieves; in them were shown the different effects the cross of Christ would have upon the children of men in the preaching the gospel. One malefactor was hardened to the last. No troubles of themselves will change a wicked…Read the comment
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 33The Skull: The Greek name is kranion, and the Aramaic name is Golgotha (Matthew 27:33; Mark 15:22). Another suggested location is Gordon’s Calvary, a rock formation near the Garden Tomb, though scholars consider this less likely. They crucified him there: People who were crucified were often tied to the cross or nailed through the wrists and ankles…Read the comment
