Context of Luke 23:33
31For if these things are done when the tree is green, what will happen when it is dry?” 32Two others, both criminals, were led out to be executed with him. When they came to a place called The Skull, they nailed him to the cross. And the criminals were also crucified—one on his right and one on his left. 34Jesus said, “Father, forgive them, for they don’t know what they are doing.” And the soldiers gambled for his clothes by throwing dice. 35The crowd watched and the leaders scoffed. “He saved others,” they said, “let him save himself if he is really God’s Messiah, the Chosen One.”

- Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 32-43Verses 32-43 As soon as Christ was fastened to the cross, he prayed for those who crucified him. The great thing he died to purchase and procure for us, is the forgiveness of sin. This he prays for. Jesus was crucified between two thieves; in them were shown the different effects the cross of Christ would have upon the children of men in the preaching the gospel. One malefactor was hardened to the last. No troubles of themselves will change a wicked…Read the comment
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 33The Skull: The Greek name is kranion, and the Aramaic name is Golgotha (Matthew 27:33; Mark 15:22). Another suggested location is Gordon’s Calvary, a rock formation near the Garden Tomb, though scholars consider this less likely. They crucified him there: People who were crucified were often tied to the cross or nailed through the wrists and ankles…Read the comment
