Context of Luke 16:20
18“Whoever divorces his wife and marries another commits adultery, and he who marries one who is divorced from her husband commits adultery. 19“Now there was a certain rich man who was habitually dressed in expensive purple and fine linen, and celebrated and lived joyously in splendor every day. And a poor man named Lazarus, was laid at his gate, covered with sores. 21He [eagerly] longed to eat the crumbs which fell from the rich man’s table. Besides, even the dogs were coming and licking his sores. 22Now it happened that the poor man died and his spirit was carried away by the angels to Abraham’s bosom (paradise); and the rich man also died and was buried.

Commentaries on Luke 16:20
- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 20There was a certain beggar named Lazarus - His name is mentioned, because his character was good, and his end glorious; and because it is the purpose of God that the righteous shall be had in everlasting remembrance. Lazarus, לעזר is a contraction of the word אלעזר Eliezar, which signifies the help or assistance of God - a name properly given to a man who was both poor and afflicted, and had no help but that which came from heaven.Read the comment
- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 20Beggar - Poor man. The original word does not mean “beggar,” but simply that he was “poor.” It should have been so translated to keep up the contrast with the “rich man.” Named Lazarus - The word Lazarus is Hebrew, and means a man destitute of help, a needy, poor man. It is a name given, therefore, to denote his needy condition. Laid at his gate - At the door of the rich man, in order that he might obtain aid. Full of sores - Covered with ulcers…Read the comment

We are not told that the rich man got his estate by fraud, or oppression; but Christ shows, that a man may have a great deal of the wealth, pomp, and pleasure of this world, yet perish for ever under God's wrath and curse. The sin of this rich man was his providing for himself only. Here is a godly man, and one…Read the comment

It also returns to the idea that when God’s Kingdom comes, many situations will be reversed (changed to the opposite). The rich, proud, and powerful will be brought low, while the poor, humble, and oppressed will be lifted up.Read the comment
