Context of Luke 16:20
18Every one who puts away his wife and marries another commits adultery; and every one that marries one put away from a husband commits adultery. 19Now there was a rich man and he was clothed in purple and fine linen, making good cheer in splendour every day. And [there was] a poor man, by name Lazarus, [who] was laid at his gateway full of sores, 21and desiring to be filled with the crumbs which fell from the table of the rich man; but the dogs also coming licked his sores. 22And it came to pass that the poor man died, and that he was carried away by the angels into the bosom of Abraham. And the rich man also died and was buried.

Commentaries on Luke 16:20
- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 20There was a certain beggar named Lazarus - His name is mentioned, because his character was good, and his end glorious; and because it is the purpose of God that the righteous shall be had in everlasting remembrance. Lazarus, לעזר is a contraction of the word אלעזר Eliezar, which signifies the help or assistance of God - a name properly given to a man who was both poor and afflicted, and had no help but that which came from heaven.Read the comment
- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 20Beggar - Poor man. The original word does not mean “beggar,” but simply that he was “poor.” It should have been so translated to keep up the contrast with the “rich man.” Named Lazarus - The word Lazarus is Hebrew, and means a man destitute of help, a needy, poor man. It is a name given, therefore, to denote his needy condition. Laid at his gate - At the door of the rich man, in order that he might obtain aid. Full of sores - Covered with ulcers…Read the comment
- Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 19-31Verses 19-31 Here the spiritual things are represented, in a description of the different state of good and bad, in this world and in the other. We are not told that the rich man got his estate by fraud, or oppression; but Christ shows, that a man may have a great deal of the wealth, pomp, and pleasure of this world, yet perish for ever under God's wrath and curse. The sin of this rich man was his providing for himself only. Here is a godly man, and one…Read the comment

It also returns to the idea that when God’s Kingdom comes, many situations will be reversed (changed to the opposite). The rich, proud, and powerful will be brought low, while the poor, humble, and oppressed will be lifted up.Read the comment
