Context of Acts 1:3
1The first account I made, Theophilus, was [a continuous report] about all the things that Jesus began to do and to teach 2until the day when He ascended to heaven, after He had by the Holy Spirit given instruction to the apostles (special messengers) whom He had chosen. To these [men] He also showed Himself alive after His suffering [in Gethsemane and on the cross], by [a series of] many infallible proofs and unquestionable demonstrations, appearing to them over a period of forty days and talking to them about the things concerning the kingdom of God. 4While being together and eating with them, He commanded them not to leave Jerusalem, but to wait for what the Father had promised, “Of which,” He said, “you have heard Me speak. 5For John baptized with water, but you will be baptized and empowered and united with the Holy Spirit, not long from now.”

- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 3To whom - he showed himself alive - by many infallible proofs - ; by many proofs of such a nature, and connected with such circumstances, as to render them indubitable; for this is the import of the Greek word . The proofs were such as these: Appearing to several different persons at different times. His eating and drinking with them. His meeting them in Galilee according to his own appointment. His subjecting his body to be touched and handled by them…Read the comment
- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 3He showed himself - The resurrection of Jesus was the great fact on which the truth of the gospel was to be established. Hence, the sacred writers so often refer to it, and establish it by so many arguments. As the fact of his resurrection lay at the foundation of all that Luke was about to record in his history, it was of importance that he should state clearly the sum of the evidence of it in the beginning of his work. After his passion - After he…Read the comment
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 3He presented Himself to them with many convincing proofs that He was alive: The Gospels provide evidence for Christ’s resurrection: Jesus’s tomb was empty (Luke 24:3–4). No one disturbed his grave clothes (John 20:3–9). Many people saw him (see Matthew 28; Mark 16:1–8; Luke 24:1–53; John 20:11–21:23; 1 Corinthians 15:3–8). Jesus appeared to the apostles to help them overcome their doubt (Matthew 28:17; Luke 24:17–24, 38, 41; John 20:27; see Mark 16:14)…Read the comment
- Jamieson–Fausset–Brown Commentary · v. 3-53-5. showed himself alive--As the author is about to tell us that "the resurrection of the Lord Jesus" was the great burden of apostolic preaching, so the subject is here filly introduced by an allusion to the primary evidence on which that great fact rests, the repeated and undeniable manifestations of Himself in the body to the assembled disciples, who, instead of being predisposed to believe it, had to be overpowered by the resistless evidence of their…Read the comment
