Context of Ephesians 3:16

14For this reason I bow my knees before the Father— 15from Him every family in heaven and on earth receives its name. I pray that from His glorious riches He would grant you to be strengthened in your inner being with power through His Ruach, 17so that Messiah may dwell in your hearts through faith. I pray that you, being rooted and grounded in love, 18may have strength to grasp with all the kedoshim what is the width and length and height and depth,

Commentaries on Ephesians 3:16

• Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 16That he would grant you - This prayer of the apostle is one of the most grand and sublime in the whole oracles of God. The riches of the grace of the Gospel, and the extent to which the soul of man may be saved here below, are most emphatically pointed out here. Every word seems to have come immediately from heaven; laboring to convey ideas of infinite importance to mankind. No paraphrase can do it justice, and few commentators seem to have entered into…Read the comment
• Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 16According to the riches of his glory - According to the glorious abundance of his mercy; see Philemon 4:19. Out of those stores of rich grace which can never be exhausted. The word “riches,” so often used by Paul, denotes “abundance,” and the idea here is, that his grace was inexhaustible and ample for all their needs. To be strengthened with might - To be powerfully strengthened. That is, to give you abundant strength to bear trials; to perform your…Read the comment
• Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 13-19Verses 13-19 The apostle seems to be more anxious lest the believers should be discouraged and faint upon his tribulations, than for what he himself had to bear. He asks for spiritual blessings, which are the best blessings. Strength from the Spirit of God in the inner man; strength in the soul; the strength of faith, to serve God, and to do our duty. If the law of Christ is written in our hearts, and the love of Christ is shed abroad there, then Christ…Read the comment
• Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 15-16from whom every family in heaven and on earth derives its name: There is a wordplay in the original Greek language between the words "Father" (patēr, 3:14) and family (patria). This wordplay shows a connection between God as Father and all the families that exist. As the Creator of everything, God made all families—both angelic families in heaven and human families on earth. This includes all people groups, whether gentile or Jewish (see 2:14–22; 3:6)…Read the comment
