Context of Acts 26:28

26For the king knows about these things, and I speak freely to him, since I am convinced that none of these things escape his notice—for this was not done in a corner. 27King Agrippa, do you believe the Prophets? I know that you do believe!” Agrippa said to Paul, “In a short time you are trying to persuade me to be Messianic!” 29And Paul said, “Whether short or long, I would pray to God that not only you, but also all who hear me today would be such as I am—except for these chains!” 30Then the king stood up, as well as the governor, Bernice, and those sitting with them.

Commentaries on Acts 26:28

• Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 28Almost thou persuadest me to be a Christian - ͅ Ϛ . This declaration was almost the necessary consequence of the apostle's reasoning, and Agrippa's faith. If he believed the prophets, see Acts 26:22, Acts 26:23, and believed that Paul's application of their words to Christ Jesus was correct, he must acknowledge the truth of the Christian religion; but he might choose whether he would embrace and confess this truth, or not. However, the sudden appeal to…Read the comment
• Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 28Then Agrippa said unto Paul - He could not deny that he believed the prophecies in the Old Testament. He could not deny that the argument was a strong one that they had been fulfilled in Jesus of Nazareth. He could not deny that the evidence of the miraculous interposition of God in the conversion of Paul was overwhelming; and instead, therefore, of charging him, as Festus had done, with derangement, he candidly and honestly avows the impression which the…Read the comment
• Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 24-32Verses 24-32 It becomes us, on all occasions, to speak the words of truth and soberness, and then we need not be troubled at the unjust censures of men. Active and laborious followers of the gospel often have been despised as dreamers or madmen, for believing such doctrines and such wonderful facts; and for attesting that the same faith and diligence, and an experience like their own, are necessary to all men, whatever their rank, in order to their…Read the comment
• Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 28"Can you persuade me in such a short time to become a Christian?": This remark might have been ironic, expressing a lack of belief. It might have been making fun of Paul, or a dismissal of Paul's challenge. It might also have been a comment on how well Paul could persuade. Or it could have been a genuine question about Paul's intention. It seems best to understand King Agrippa's reply as intentionally trying to avoid the question. He did not want to admit…Read the comment
• Jamieson–Fausset–Brown Commentary · v. 27-2927-29. believest thou the prophets? I know that thou believest--The courage and confidence here shown proceeded from a vivid persuasion of Agrippa's knowledge of the facts and faith in the predictions which they verified; and the king's reply is the highest testimony to the correctness of these presumptions and the immense power of such bold yet courteous appeals to conscience.Read the comment
