Context of Acts 21:18

16Some of the disciples from Caesarea also went with us, bringing us to Mnason of Cyprus—one of the early disciples by whom we might be hosted. 17When we arrived in Jerusalem, the brothers and sisters welcomed us gladly. On the next day, Paul went in with us to Jacob; all the elders were present. 19After greeting them, he reported to them in detail what God had done among the Gentiles through his service. 20And when they heard, they began glorifying God. They said, “You see, brother, how many myriads there are among the Jewish people who have believed—and they are all zealous for the Torah.

Commentaries on Acts 21:18

• Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 18Went in with us unto James - This was James the Less, son of Mary; and cousin to our Lord. He appears to have been bishop of the Church in Jerusalem, and perhaps the only apostle who continued in that city. We have already seen what a very important character he sustained in the council. See Acts 15:13. All the elders were present - It appears that they had been convened about matters of serious and important moment; and some think it was relative to Paul…Read the comment
• Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 18Unto James - James the Less. See the notes on Acts 15:13. He resided at Jerusalem. Compare Galatians 1:19. It is not improbable that he was the only one of the apostles then at Jerusalem; and there is reason to believe that the church at Jerusalem was left under his particular care. It was natural, therefore, that Paul and his companions should take an early opportunity to see him. James was the cousin of our Lord, and in Galatians 1:19 he is called the…Read the comment
• Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 8-18Verses 8-18 Paul had express warning of his troubles, that when they came, they might be no surprise or terror to him. The general notice given us, that through much tribulation we must enter into the kingdom of God, should be of the same use to us. Their weeping began to weaken and slacken his resolution Has not our Master told us to take up our cross? It was a trouble to him, that they should so earnestly press him to do that in which he could not…Read the comment
• Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 18-19It was important for James and all the elders (leaders) of the church in Jerusalem to hear about Paul’s successful work among the Gentiles. It was also important for the Jerusalem church, the first main church, to continue to support this mission (21:20; see 15:7–21). Paul’s report showed that God had carried out his plan among the Gentiles through Paul’s work.Read the comment
