18And many other things in his exhortation he preached to the people. 19But Herod the tetrarch, being reproved by him on account of Herodias his brother Philip’s wife, and for all the evils which Herod had done, Added yet this above all, that he shut up John in prison. 21Now when all the people were baptized, it came to pass, that Jesus also being baptized, and praying, the heaven was opened, 22And the Holy Spirit descended in a bodily shape like a dove upon him, and a voice came from heaven, which said, Thou art my beloved Son; in thee I am well pleased.

Commentaries on Luke 3:20
- Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 15-20Verses 15-20 John the Baptist disowned being himself the Christ, but confirmed the people in their expectations of the long-promised Messiah. He could only exhort them to repent, and assure them of forgiveness upon repentance; but he could not work repentance in them, nor confer remission on them. Thus highly does it become us to speak of Christ, and thus humbly of ourselves. John can do no more than baptize with water, in token that they ought to purify…Read the comment
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 19-20Herod Antipas was the ruler of Galilee. He divorced his first wife and married Herodias. Herodias was the wife of his half-brother Herod Philip. When John publicly criticized Herod for this sin, Herod imprisoned and later executed him (compare 9:9; Mark 6:16–29). Herod’s execution of John is also recorded by the Jewish historian Josephus (Antiquities 18.5.2).Read the comment
