Context of Luke 24:5

3And they entered in, and found not the body of the Lord Jesus. 4And it came to pass, as they were much perplexed about this, behold, two men stood by them in shining garments: And as they were afraid, and bowed down their faces to the earth, they said to them, Why seek ye the living among the dead? 6He is not here, but is risen: remember how he spoke to you when he was yet in Galilee, 7Saying, The Son of man must be delivered into the hands of sinful men, and be crucified, and the third day rise again.

Commentaries on Luke 24:5

• Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 5Why seek ye the living among the dead? - This was a common form of speech among the Jews, and seems to be applied to those who were foolishly, impertinently, or absurdly employed. As places of burial were unclean, it was not reasonable to suppose that the living should frequent them; or that if any was missing he was likely to be found in such places.Read the comment

• Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 5-7Jesus had told his followers many times that he would rise from the dead (see 9:22, 44; 17:25; 18:31–34). The resurrection of Jesus is a key belief of the Christian faith (see 1 Corinthians 15:3–7, 12–57).Read the comment
• Jamieson–Fausset–Brown Commentary · v. 1-12(See on Mr 16:1-8; and Mt 28:1-5). 5. Why, &c.--Astonishing question! not "the risen," but "the Living One" (compare Re 1:18); and the surprise expressed in it implies an incongruity in His being there at all, as if, though He might submit to it, "it was impossible He should be holden of it" (Ac 2:24).Read the comment
