Context of Hebrews 8:3
1Now of the things which we have spoken this is the sum: We have such an high priest, who is seated on the right hand of the throne of the Majesty in the heavens; 2A minister of the sanctuary, and of the true tabernacle, which the Lord pitched, and not man. For every high priest is appointed to offer gifts and sacrifices: therefore it is of necessity that this man should have somewhat also to offer. 4For if he were on earth, he should not be a priest, seeing there are priests that offer gifts according to the law: 5Who serve to the example and shadow of heavenly things, as Moses was admonished by God when he was about to make the tabernacle: for, See, saith he, that thou make all things according to the pattern shown to thee in the mount.

By the former, God's government of the universe, and his benevolence to his creatures in providing for their support, were acknowledged. - Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 3For every high priest is ordained to offer gifts and sacrifices - This is a general statement about the functions of the high priest. It was the uniqueness of the office; it constituted its essence, that some gift or sacrifice was to be presented. This was indisputable in regard to the Jewish high priest, and this is involved in the nature of the priestly office everywhere. A “priest” is one who offers sacrifice, mainly in behalf of others. The principles…Read the comment
