Context of Hebrews 3:10

8Harden not your hearts, as in the provocation, Like as in the day of the temptation in the wilderness, 9Wherewith your fathers tempted me by proving me, And saw my works forty years. Wherefore I was displeased with this generation, And said, They do alway err in their heart: But they did not know my ways; 11As I sware in my wrath, They shall not enter into my rest. 12Take heed, brethren, lest haply there shall be in any one of you an evil heart of unbelief, in falling away from the living God:

Commentaries on Hebrews 3:10

• Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 10Wherefore I was grieved - God represents himself as the Father of this great Jewish family, for whose comfort and support he had made every necessary provision, and to whom he had given every proof of tenderness and fatherly affection; and because, they disobeyed him, and walked ill that way in which they could not but be miserable, therefore he represents himself as grieved and exceedingly displeased with them. They do alway err in their hearts - Their…Read the comment
• Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 10Wherefore I was grieved - On the word “grieved,” see the notes at Ephesians 4:30. The word here means that he was offended with, or that he was indignant at them. They do always err in their heart - Their long trial of forty years had been sufficient to show that it was a characteristic of the people that they were disposed to wander from God. Forty years are enough to show what the character is. They had seen his works; they had been called to obey him…Read the comment
• Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 7-13Verses 7-13 Days of temptation are often days of provocation. But to provoke God, when he is letting us see that we entirely depend and live upon him, is a provocation indeed. The hardening of the heart is the spring of all other sins. The sins of others, especially of our relations, should be warnings to us. All sin, especially sin committed by God's professing, privileged people, not only provokes God, but it grieves him. God is loth to destroy any in…Read the comment
• Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 9-10Even after witnessing the miracles God performed for them, the people of Israel tested God's patience by not trusting him in the wilderness (Numbers 14:11, 22). Their rebellion stemmed from their hearts consistently turning away from God. They did not want to obey God. As a result, God became angry with them.Read the comment
• Jamieson–Fausset–Brown Commentary · v. 7-117-11. Exhortation from Psa 95:7-11, not through unbelief to lose participation in the spiritual house. Seeing that we are the house of God if we hold fast our confidence ... (He 3:6). Jesus is "faithful," be not ye unfaithful (He 3:2, 12). The sentence beginning with "wherefore," interrupted by the parenthesis confirming the argument from Psa 95:7-11, is completed at He 3:12, "Take heed," &c.
